Phoebe and Her Unicorn by Dana Simpson for July 05, 2013
Transcript:
Marigold: Is being the lake monster s good gig? Lake monster: It isn't a lot of work. I sleep in the deep part of the lake most of the year, and in the summer I occasionally get to should "BOO" at a camper. Marigold: That sounds lonely. Lake monster: Less so since the camp got wi-fi.

Lol I wounder what social media Lake Monsters use? I wounder if lake minsters ever play the NES? I wounder the name of that girl playing the Cello last episode. and I wounder what Sue and Phoebe are doing while Marigold is talking to a lake monster and why the reflection thing only captivates her occasionally in these strips? and I wounder what the lake monster’s name and user name are? And when Tod was selling Ice cream, who was he getting as customers? other unicorns or do humans buy from him with out thinking Todd odd?and If the candy dragon sat under the shade of a tree would he be Todd in the shadows? Also my summer camp didn’t have a lake monster. We had an Undead Axe Murderer named Lenny and a freaky duck with a red thing on its face and green and white feathers that we nick named the battle ship. Also he ate M&Ms

Loch Ness is one of the creepiest places on the planet. It just looks like it HAS to have a lake monster. Large, dark, deep and cold, with a ruined castle on shore, to boot. Loch Lomond is quite inviting and cheery by comparison.

Hey, the lake monster uses contractions! (Not complaining—I just noticed it!)

You have to like a lake monster who embraces modern technology.

Even Loch Ness is on line??? Dang. No wonder no one gets pics of Nessie… he/she knows when to avoid posts on Facebook like “Will be surfacing for air and scaring the hell out of ground-based tourists for the next hour.” LOL!!! The mystery monter has more web fame than I do!!!

As far as Marigold’s reflection gazing goes, I think it has to do with the ripple effect of the water. When the water is calm and has a mirror effect, then Marigold can see and get memorized by her reflection. but if there are ripples from rowing, or splashing, then her reflection gets distorted and Marigold is less likely to be hypnotized. Phoebe really only needed to skim the rock across the lake when they first met, it wasn’t necessary to hit MG with the stone (but it was comical).

Ha! When I first read this, I thought the dragon was yelling “800!” but I see now it’s really “BOO!” Much scarier to yell 800, I think. At least, it’s more mysterious.

I just returned from camp. The lake did not have a monster, but there were ancient effigy mounds and excellent rock climbing. I thought about Marigold while watching the trick water ski show, but I doubt the unicorn will try that.
Thanks Dana for putting Marigold in a canoe, it was really cute.

Look at those faces… I think they’re related! (Now wouldn’t that make a cute discovery of long-lost relatives?) :-)

Any one else imagine the serpent speaking with a Marge Gunderson accent?
