ABOUT TODAY’S GUEST CARTOONIST FOR FROG APPLAUSE:
When Jeff Kersten was eleven, he appointed himself historian of Woodstock, Illinois, the town where he was born and raised. For the last 50 years of his life, Woodstock was also home to Chester Gould, Creator of the DICK TRACY comic strip. Jeff never had the pleasure to meet Chester Gould, which may be his sole regret…so far. At fifteen, Jeff helped found the Chester Gould - DICK TRACY Museum in Woodstock. Jeff dressed up like Dick Tracy during those early years for the annual DICK TRACY Days event, a week-long celebration honoring Gould’s lifetime of contributions to American culture and the town of Woodstock. Jeff currently serves as Secretary of the Museum’s Board of Directors. He is also co-editing and publishing the Museum’s reprint effort, The Sunday Project, republishing Chester Gould’s full-color Sunday pages for the very first time. In June of 2008, the Museum was unable to fund its day-to-day operations and closed its doors. Jeff is
working currently with the Gould family to design a “virtual” Museum website that, once all phases are complete, will be the most definitive resource on the life and creations of Chester Gould. The website, www.dicktracymuseum.com, is expected to launch in the spring of 2009.
I’ll remember this one tomorrow when I need a frickin microscope to read the text on the Sunday comics. Lots of space for ads and shyte but only a little for the actual content. The way things a going, advertisers will own the internet (if they don’t already!).
I’m impressed!
Jeff, you took an opportunity to make a vengeful retort and turned it into a commentary on the state of newspaper comics that everyone here can appreciate and agree with. Bravo!
If this is indeed your own drawing (and since you signed it I suspect that it is), congratulations. The quibbles are just a knee-jerk reaction.

Oh! Now I remember that mean-cranky lady! She started all of this!

Black ink, a quill pen, an ink brush and a watercolor brush…and good ole’ Prang watercolors, flyingflowerpot.
When I was 15, I taught myself to draw with India ink using a Gillott pen nib and brush, but now that Gillott is long gone, I use a Hunt “extra fine” #22 nib and Princeton brushes of various sizes. I find that the Hunt #22 gives me enough action to draw just about any size line I want.
Watterson got out while there was still semblance of spacing for Calvin to swoop into those alien planets only to be captured and tortured by hideous creatures.

Is this the twilight zone? What’s Dick Tracy doing here… and why is he crawling around in his best suit?
