Maple syrup pre-dates the American style hotcakes. But that depends on what you consider a “hotcake”… there are plenty of similar pancakes from other countries that have been around for centuries.
Before syrup, they were called Scottish Scones and were served with jams or lemon curd (heavenly) at afternoon tea!
