That’s a sweet story and I’m not doubting it at all. But was James Doohan ever a “full-on movie star?” His Wiki page doesn’t indicate that but it does show that his generosity, such as in today’s cartoon, was not one-off.
My all-time favorite Scotty line is from my all-time favorite Star Trek episode “The Trouble with Tribbles” when he says to the Klingon, who is looking for trouble; “Laddie…don’t you think you should…rephrase that?”
James Doohan was also a completely bad-ass soldier – flew in the Canadian Air Force and was an artillery captain who led his men to battle in the D-Day landing at Normandy. http://www.cracked.com/article_20442_5-celebrities-you-wont-believe-were-badass-soldiers_p2.html
I’m in a wheelchair with MD too. I did see Mr. Doohan at a local Trek convention, but wasn’t able to get as close. But some years before that, when I attended my first convention, DeForest Kelley after coming off stage from his speech and Q&A stopped right next to me and personally asked if I had any questions for him. Unfortunately I didn’t, but I’ll never forget him doing that.
An inspiring story, and a witty twist at the end that is so typical of Myer’s strips. As much as I would have enjoyed having a beer with Doohan, I think it would be even more fun to share a brew and some repartee with Scott.
A friend and teacher of mine was a pro football player turned actor. 20 odd years ago I got an early morning phone call from him asking me if I wanted to go to a party at the Paramount lot. I couldn’t, but thanked him for the invite. It wasn’t until months later that I found out it was the wrap party for Star Trek 6 where my friend played a Klingon.
I’ve just had a collision of issues at work, and I have to admit that the strip and the stories have totally lifted my mood.I’d have to put Scotty second from the top, just behind the Green Woman. Or maybe some of the other women as well. I’m sure he’d understand.

James Doohan has now been promoted to my second favorite Star Trek character. But he’d have to have performed a faith healing to supplant Spock.

I never got to see what I wanted most:
“Scotty, I need more power.”
“Sir, I can’t give it much more. She won’t handle the stress.”
BOOM.

It would be even funnier if the asterisk * was in both panels.
