My stepson was like this, he didn’t know how to respond to someone who was genuinely nice. He thought that if you were nice to him, you must want something. It took a lot of time and patience but now he is a wonderful, loving, intelligent young man in college who has thanked us repeatedly for not giving up on him. (We were awarded custody of him when he was 11 after his mother neglected and abused him).
This reminds me of the day Number 2 son came in and complained that the teachers were ignoring the people at his table at lunch. Number One Wife asked him who else sat there. He named three other rambunctious children.“No, son, they are NOT ignoring you. They are pretending to ignore you so they can deal with the others with whom they have a prayer of control.” -I’m pretty sure nobody is indifferent to our beloved Agnes at home, no matter what they may pretend.-I strongly suspect Agnes will wear down the counselors ere long.
