The problem is that representational art has become so commonplace that it’s boring (particularly to members of the art community). Also, camera technology has made realistic painting pretty much redundant. But as Agnes demonstrates in the last panel, the most important thing is that someone is willing to pay for it.
Art is what an artist produces.-Even so, some art is bad art. Some art is commercial art, which is to say people are willing to pay for it.-Some art is good and commercialSome art is bad and commercialSome art is good and noncommercialSome art is bad and noncommercial-Agnes is a work of art.
“Believe me, NO camera technology can duplicate the beauty of Rubens, Titian, Monet, etc.”
Trust me, what analog photography took away from representational painters 150 years ago (i.e. “How much does it look like the thing it’s supposed to look like?”), digital imaging technology is already taking away from the “stylists.”
You want your vacation snapshots to look like Monet watercolors? There’s an app for that. (Of course, that’s again mere imitation, not innovation.)
French Impressionism already WAS a reaction against the advent of photography, a deliberate moving-away from mere verisimilitude (“Does the cow look like a cow?”) into conveying the emotional impression of “Lone Cow at Sunset.” And it caused a SCANDAL at the time. The painting is the arrangement of color on canvas, not what it depicts. Ceci n’est pas une pipe.
From there it’s a straight line (and not a long one) to pure abstraction.
