GODFREY: Good morning, Francis! Good morning, Teddy! Nate! For heaven's sake, straighten up! You're slouching!
NATE: Me? Slouching? Gee, why would I be slouching? Could it be all the pressure you pile on me??
TEDDY: Gonna be a long year.
As a teacher myself, I know Mrs. Godfrey would get better results with a little light teasing or maybe mourning the loss of summer with Nate. She started this problem, not Nate. She falls into his expectations when she yells at him for slouching in the hall. Who cares if a kid is slouching in the hall; in his desk, then you get to remind him to sit up and focus. Though that is better done with positive reinforcement by thanking the students who are doing the right thing. The students get a reminder of your expectation and fix it on their own.
Is Mrs. Godfrey the only social studies teacher in the whole school? Surely by now Nate and his friends would be in another grade…Let the poor woman and the poor boy have a break from each other by now, Lincoln!
Night-Gaunt49: I was fairly confident you knew this, your name being used as a subject reference. However, it is amazing how many other people don’t know this rather obvious fact. Since my first book was a camping how-to, I have had ample occasion to encounter this attitude. I think peer pressure (that great weapon of mindless conformity) was the reason we didn’t use it in our day.
As a teacher, I’ve never greeted a student with an admonishment or a complaint. Never. Always hi, good morning, welcome, then go on to an admonishment if necessary. I have no sympathy for Godfrey on this one.

I was betting on the 50-pound backpacks, not the “pressure”.Having to carry around those things (backpacks) is not good for your back.

Night-Gaunt49: It is easier to wear a load than to carry it; that is why they invented backpacks and pockets.

Ah, yes, backpacks. My spine developed its curvature in seventh grade. It’s still painful for me to stand fully upright.
