As a teacher I see work like this all the time. We are so off base in where we are heading in our schools it is frightening. Federal mandated state testing is killing us. The handwriting in this is a good example of what I mean. Being able to print and write in cursive are not tested, so elementary schools DO NOT TEACH it. Teachers used to teach how to properly form printed letters. They taught kids to make the letters from top down. Look at the printing in the comic, at ‘preschool’ in #13 for example. It looks wrong because it is wrong, they were written from the bottom up. It makes a difference. I have 8th graders. Smart, intelligent children, who do not know how to write in cursive. They can’t even sign their own names. Because they werent taught how. Because the federal government mandates state testing. And because handwriting is not a testable area teachers do not ‘waste’ time on it. Because every minute in our clasroom is precious and must be spent on what is being tested. Or we are considered worthless and are poor teachers. Sorry, soapbox time is over for today, class. You’re dismissed.
Dinner worked out quite nicely Margueritem. Thank you for asking. I just wish that I would have bought more oysters. We have some of the best oysters in North America up here and they are like breathing in sea air.
Dypak: I’ve been out of school for a long time. I had no idea that handwriting was no longer taught. My handwriting is terrible, but I can’t blame the teachers for that.
Interesting point of evolution, comic style wise. This is similar to the style we so often, but not always, see in 2021. As of 2021, and for a few years prior, we hardly ever see the more cartoony style characters, and see much more of this mixed mash-up of images and collage-like layout.

I’d be glad to lend a hand. Is that one of your old papers, Teresa?

Is that “Ode to a Grecian Urn”? What’s a Grecian urn you ask? About $5.34 an hour.
