Phoebe and Her Unicorn by Dana Simpson for August 11, 2013
Transcript:
Phoebe: They're making a "Pastel Unicorns" movie! It says so right here! I can't wait to see all my favorites galloping across the screen! Marigold: It says the movie "contains no galloping." Two minutes in, the unicorns become human, and enroll in Popular High School. The title is "Pastel Unicorns: Skinny Pretty Non-Unicorns." Phoebe: But... to play that, I'd need to get mom and dad to buy me an entirely NEW set of... adults are just messing with me, aren't they? Marigold: So are unicorns! It is just subtler.

I knew it all along. Pheebs your in the conspiracy. Also why do so many MLP fans look down on Equestria girls when its exactly what most of them posted as fanart on the internet before and after the movie was a thing? Personally I think its brilliant and wounder what Marigold would look like as a human or what pheebs looks like as a unicorn.
What do you call some one who loves HN and enjoys MLP fanart but not the series its self but loves the idea of pony’s as humans? and while able to name a lot of ponys I still some times say “Shutterfly” and can’t tell Babs from Scootaloo with out a guide book but I still make my own orginal ponies and keep requesting bronies to make fan art of them and I think Bronies are the best people ever but I enjoy HN more then MLP any how and I keep telling bronies to check the strip out but they never do? Am I a bronie yet or just some thing else?

And humans are about as subtle as, say, I don’t know, a rock to the face? :D Sorry the move’s been such a terrible hassle Dana, but this strip more than makes up for it!

Also do the pastel unicorns have names?

Well, that opinion does not seem to be shared by anyone in either of the audiences when I went to see Equestria Girls. Young girls, their mothers, bronies, you name it – we all thought (as far as I know, anyway – didn’t actually talk to everybody) that it was rather trivial, yes, but damn enjoyable anyway. I’m looking forward to getting it in my mailbox tomorrow. Direct to Blu-Ray, not DVD, but still. DaBomb619 seems like someone who was deadset against it before they ever went into the theater, and never bothered to relax and enjoy what there was to enjoy, which was quite a bit, as far as I’m concerned. Doesn’t change my complete agreement with the last two panels of this strip, regardless. Agreement, and laughing out loud – good one, Dana!

Its a case of have your ponies and humans too. The movie will be the intro for a 2nd new series that will attract more young fans who do not relate to ponies. There will of course be more marketing opportunities and more new merchandise as well. Its capitalism at its best. Something for everyone!

I may be wrong but I get the impression from this strip that Dana does not share the enthusiasm for an expanded franchise.

As much as I adored the movie (finding how cute it was for Twilight to struggle with her human form while finding her stolen crown and all the catchy songs), I am not that impressed with the merchandise. If Hasbro is gonna sell humanized dolls the company should at least try to be alot more accurate, that’s one of the reasons why the Monster High franchise is so successful. Until they do that I am gonna hold off on the dolls that don’t include the bonus ponies.

It’s all about the money Phoebe…I liked Equestria Girls. It was a nice change of pace, and we got to see a bit of Twi trying to adjust to her new wings, etc.

Well for some one not in the loop making ponies in to high school girls makes them more relate-able, more like Strawberry Shortcake. It was nice to see a series take influence from all the anthro fan art. Monster Girls is a nice idea put a really annoying presentation the series has uninteresting plots and the characters look too human. I wish Hotel Transylvania had spun off to a series they did the almost same idea and did it right. Gender swapped monsters is a cool idea but its just more typical girl stuff not nearly as empowering as Toph or Korra. On the other hand there is worse ideas out there like the He-man movie that killed off 90% of the masters off screen , added new characters and sent the cast to New York to have a wacky Beast master-like fish out of water story and to save on the budget of creating a new world. I ended up in a HUGE rant listing every movie that people got wrong and fans hated because of some change to the characters but it ended up being long. What it comes down to is should a studio stay true to the source material or should they take creative liberties and alter things and give us some thing new? People complain about every small change and every big change and they complain if you do no changes. Its actually easier to list the short list of obscure good ideas then it is to go over the easily recalled list of bad ideas. One thing that makes me kind of sad is when the remake replaces the original in our minds. But on the note of Selling tows, that was 90% of “The Batman” yes other shows do this too but with The Batman it felt like every move was to sell a toy
Also there are actually shows that don’t sell enough toys and those are the ones that get ended. Also we still live in a world where girl toys are pastel and boy toys don’t include girl characters.

The whole concept ticked me off because my whole life I’ve been subjected to TV shows that romanticized high school and basically portrayed it as a bunch of pretty people with minor romantic problems. High school was hell for me and I feel like the experience of people like me is almost never acknowledged — the only example I can think of that even comes close is Daria.Seeing a show with a message that I respected going down that same “Pretty Skinny Girls With Problems” road really irks me.

As always, for legal purposes, any resemblance of actual people and events is COMPLETELY coincidental, right? :P

Equestria Girls is an abomination which should not exist.

Think you’re disheartened NOW, kid? Wait’ll you find out there’s only ONE theatre having ONE showing of the film on ONE day… And all the tickets are already sold out to men in their 30s.
PHOEBE: ………… And people call ME weird!

If one doesn’t care for Equestria Girls, that’s fine.
If one feels they must use every single mention of it to launch into an essay-length tirade (including but not limited to camping out on the YouTube trailer to shout at everyone who came along, even before the film was released), that person is probably NOT a brony.

Every time I look at this strip, I can’t help but be bothered by the way the green Pastel Pony’s back leg was mistakenly colored lilac.

Must be the live-action movie version. Y’know, the ones about cartoon characters that for budget reasons focus almost exclusively on the worthless human characters? Fun stuff.
