If he’d drawn the ‘north’ end of a large bar magnet, presumably extending down to the south magnetic pole, not many readers would’ve caught on – I suspect. So the horseshoe is an iconic representation of a magnet that works here. I feel drawn to it myself, guess I have too much iron in my blood.
