Doonesbury by Garry Trudeau for September 06, 2013
Transcript:
Rick: Mr. Speaker, do you really believe the GOP's best hope is more voter suppression? John Boehner: What? I never said that! Rick: Oh, no? Then how do you explain this? John Boehner: ...although you didn't hear that from me! Jeff: Dad? Rick: Uh... yes? Jeff: Do you ever fantasize about breaking a big story?

Since my fellow Doonesbury commentators say that GBT only attacks Republicans, here is a subtle criticism of that little known (in the UK at least) Republican, Michael Dukakis:http://www.gocomics.com/doonesbury/1988/09/22 Dukakis message of the day Mike

Wow! As recently as 1988! Just casually flip back 25 years and there it is, plain as day! Gosh and golly! Obviously all that strum and drang about Trudeau being biased is a total canard!

Good one, Capn – strum – I wonder what that means.

From the Doonesbury site on Slate:Editor’s Note: Funny story. New daily strips were supposed to begin on Monday, September 9th, but late last week GBT, still immersed in writing the political sitcom “Alpha House,” sent an apology to client newspaper editors, admitting that he had “hit the wall” and will not be able to get back to the dailies for another 10 weeks. The good news is that new Sunday strips will resume, as planned, on September 8th — this coming weekend. Enjoy.

sturm und?And what is it, anyway, storm and ? ? ?Oh if only I had studied Nazi, er German
Ray Thomas about 11 years ago
Of course everybody knows it’s the DEMOCRATS who depend on voter suppression.
montessoriteacher about 11 years ago
Democrats want to rock the vote, not block the vote! We could accept the idea that the GOP has as much power as it has if only there were really a representative majority of the population who would indeed vote!

Gotta love it…Rush busts a gut

I’m confused. Can someone point out where it’s written that Trudeau has some obligation to be neutral or non-partisan?
marvee about 11 years ago
If Rick knew how to hack into computers and other electronic devices, he might actually get that story.
David Huie Green LoveJoyAndPeace about 11 years ago
Why?If one admits his ignorance, how is that stupid? And while it is unfair of us, some DO consider the two words interchangeable. In fact some of my ancestors were German but disliked their mistreatement, so they got while the getting was good..but thank you for your advice

Storm and drive.A concept rejecting rationalism and embracing emotionalism.
Okay, I can see where it had nothing to do with rational nazism, thanks for directing me to it

No, dear friend, I wouldn’t be arrested because I would never do such a thing. Therefore, it would never come up if all were as honest as thee and me. Are all honest??Besides there are people other than Republicans who have ID. Why do my fellow Democrats keep claiming otherwise?Paranoia?I thought the Republicans were supposed to have the paranoia thing exclusive..Now I’m confused.

I feel like I’m in a movie vacation or something. Ahhh… breathe in all that political hate , bigotry and racism. “I love the smell of napalm in the morning!”
DoctorDan about 11 years ago
And I, too, deplore the ignorance of some voters. But again, what’s the alternative? Some kind of current-events-test screening? I don’t care for that idea.
DoctorDan about 11 years ago
Re the race card: yeah, that syllogism – you point out that I’m pushing racist policies, so YOU’RE playing the race card – is an old standby of the right. You also see it used in economic policy discussions. The Cons spend thirty-odd years implementing policies that steadily syphon more and more money away from the middle class and toward the 1% – union-busting, lower taxes for the wealthy, elimination of the “death tax” – and when anyone points out the cause and effect relationship, the Cons accuse them of fomenting class warfare. It’s classic misdirection.

All voters have to identify themselves at the polls. Give full name and address, for example. In order to cheat, you have to find out the full name and address of someone who is registered to vote, but will not be appearing, and be certain that no one who knows that person (or knows you) will be at the polls. This is not going to happen in a small town like mine. But then, no one is worrying about small towns and rural communities which now vote overwhelmingly Republican. It is the urban areas which vote overwhelmingly Democratic. Having some kind of ID card in addition is not a bad idea, and in most places such ID has been required for years. The new voter ID laws are intended to disqualify old forms of identification, while making it difficult and expensive to get the new kind, while little or no money is appropriated to ensure that all qualified voters have “proper” IDs. I say let’s go back to the system that prevailed in the days’ of our Founding Fathers’ youth, when voting was a responsibility, and failure to appear at the polls was punishable just as failure to appear for jury duty can be punished, or once, dodging the draft. Why do the GOPers like to talk so much about “individual responsibility” and yet never get up in arms about all those people who or irresponsibly shirking their duty as citizens and staying away from the polls?

Many people feel that they are sending a message(There is no choice in this election?), when they do not vote. The problem is that message was spun to be one of apathy(I really don’t care). This is sad, because there is little choice anymore, even Obama changed his spots after he was privy to national secrets. They will continue to do more of the same unless we call them on it every time.

“Dukakis stopped being relevant, oh, about 25 years ago.”-By being such a poor candidate, he determined the other candidate would be elected, this affected the candidates the next time and the butterfly flapped its wings and here we are today.
David Huie Green LoveJoyAndPeace about 11 years ago
“It is only the Republicans claiming there is a problem with ID’s and voting. There isn’t.”-There is not, has never been and never could be a problem with voter fraud?-Okay, if you say so.

All blather… we need Omnius to enighten us with his well-elucidated opinions on the subject at hand.
susan.e.a.c about 11 years ago
So basically the point is that the Democrats are so dull and lifeless that there are no stories to get from them, or that Trudeau doesn’t think anybody cares about Democrat lies and crimes??
David Huie Green LoveJoyAndPeace about 11 years ago
“The point was that anyone trying, wouldn’t get away with it.”-Interesting point but you and I know criminals get away with crimes all the time.

DavyG, I don’t see 3/5 as an abolitionist point. Since Southerners didn’t see slaves as human, why should they get any vote at all? Can I vote for 3/5 of my furniture? The Southerners should have had one vote per adult male, same as in the North.

To Mike31g:
You do realise that the whole series you pointed to was an attack on Bush and the Republicans, not on Dukakis? Or are you so totally out of touch that you think that one strip was an attack?
GBT has always been a very left wing liberal and had no shame in showing it in his strips. As someone with a right wing bias I’ve always enjoyed his snipes but no one can seriously believe that he tries to play an even hand. His extremely light touch on the current Prez is yet another example of his bias. There is a huge amount of humour to mine from Obama’s terms but GBT is too biased to play with much of it.
