There are even more drastic responses to overly delicate car alarms (which I still hear from time to time, but not so incessantly and regularly as when I was living in a European capital city for an extended period). —-Things like shoot the car, firebomb the car, beat the car with clubs or rocks or tire irons, etc. So E.B. is definitely right in looking on the bright side of what just happened. Of course, Monty may not be so cheery about it….
One of the few times I was surprised by Miss Manners advice was when somebody wrote to her complaining about the constant noise of car alarms going off in his neighborhood. Instead of agreeing, she replied “How do you know their car isn’t really being stolen?” How much do you want to bet she had a really nice car with a state of the art alarm?
Another pet peeve of mine is those cars that have the device that makes a noise to indicate that the doors are locked. Why couldn’t it have the car lights flicker instead which wouldn’t disturb anyone? If there’s one thing the world doesn’t need is an additional annoying noise.
Way to go, Oldestandwisest! I hate all these noisy “improvements”. I still lock & unlock my car doors with a key. And you can have a mechanic disable this feature.
FYI , in the land of OZ it is mandated for house alarms to sound for no longer than 5 or 10 minutes and car alarms even less . ( Hi all . I just signed up)

Just sound waves…they contact the ear drum and are gone…no need to be unpleasant…

Some friends had a cat that would set off the neighbour’s car alarm when it was bored.

If They’d just do that to the Driver instead the problem would abate much quicker.

Nobody I know ever comes running when a car alarm goes off and I live in the city. I have a Lojack instead.
