Susan……….I’m confused. I was talking to Marg and she told me she thought Don wanted to give her a manicure.I asked her why would he give her a manicure, and she said he told her to get upstairs that he wanted to nail her.
Dale hears Marge describing women who are doing something customarily regarded as part of the masculine identity. So, in light mockery, he assumes what he believes are hallmark womanly characteristics, i.e. wearing a husband beater tank top, short shorts, and a cutthroat pursuit of gelt.
Burl chides that Dale may be revealing more of his true self than he intends to.
Maybe Joy and Marline is taking up smoking cigars and Dale is suggesting to gat higher paying jobs to support it..??But I can’t see either of them doing any more than they have to so the ladies are out of the extra $$for the habit anyway…
Nothing in the entire toon today appears to belong in the same panel (and I was just thinking that yesterday’s was so well done).
The formal/clean white tablecloth does not go with the cheaper than usual grey plastic chairs. or with the guys in wife-beaters and short shorts. Dale is already burning the food, but talking about getting a better job (which frightens Burl – the ONE thing here that makes sense is Burl wanting no mention of anything that might cause him to actually WORK). OOH!
I just got a brainstorm:The whole gang just watched a movie on TV that
Showed how their betters live and
They are each giving some little snippet of what details of the movie impressed them.
Dale’s makes some sense at least (to improve themselves, they need better jobs) and back to BURL who wants no work!
The girls notice the oddest and least important detail (one of the affluent women could have smoked a cigar) so they will become elegant and wealthy if they follow suit.
Well…. Lets see…. Uh…. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++I do not get it at all, and while technically Toes may have gotten it right, I am not overly excited about that explanation either. Instead, I will weave my own story and segues: +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++Marlene and Joy, being the epitomes of style and grace that they both exemplify, are always on the lookout to find the next, hot, cutting-edge way to flout their vivaciousness and charisma. Marlene read a blurb about women smoking cigars in the latest issue of Vogue that she pawed through at the Barnes & Noble she accidentally walked into thinking it was a new grocery store. Now, the two of them will opine about whether or not to indulge themselves in this fashion for the next few hours. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++Dale having stuck his hand on a hot grill, feels an intense, searing pain due to the grill’s temperature…. but this triggers a flashback for him to another enormously painful thought he once had several decades ago to find a high paying job (involving actual effort). +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++Burl, ever the considerate one, gently suggests to Dale that he is being a bit too boisterous for his own good. Neither he nor Dale are paying any attention to Marlene or Joy. This lack of attention creates a feedback loop of sorts, where now Marlene and Joy will begin to scheme even harder about how to capture the eyes of “their man”. This may tip them over the edge on the cigar issue. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++So, that is my own personal rendition of how the comic reads.
I don’t have time to read the comments on the ten or so comics I have here, but when I got to this one, I had to read the comments to see why I just didn’t get the joke. Guess we all are a bit confused, or Julie is. Absolutely no sense.

Huh? OK its official, Julie has gone slightly kookoo.

AND it would be a good idea for Dale to take his hand off the grill.

“smoking cigars”=corporate affluence?“high paying jobs”=responsibility and accountability?“keep quiet”=low (achievable) expectations for Burl?
MissScarlet Premium Member about 11 years ago
BTW, who is talking? The chair? The invisible cigar smoking woman? Not that that would clear anything up.

Can you get a higher paying job because you want one? I didn’t know that.
I would like to see Joy and Marlene light up, turn green and get sick.
