Yeah, but only because she’s heard this song-and-dance routine before: “My problem is boys. My other problem is boys. And boys, boys, and boys.” But this time, Luann is actually seeking out help for something other than the opposite sex.
JayBluE about 11 years ago
In the beginning of the strip, Lu would “walk right into” a trap, with what she said, when Brad would ‘zing’ her, using what she said, which set it up so well, in the first place… I guess since then, it’s expanded to include almost everyone…. I see that Greg is still favoring this gag….

I agree. I just don’t find much to like about Bernice.

No one knows you like your best friend. For you young’uns, that’s BFF.
Mikeyj about 11 years ago
I guess my first surprise was that Luann was getting paid for that library job. I thought it was a volunteer kind of thing.^^It has been both at different times…. it was a paying job when Luann bought her car, then, her car disappeared and it was a volunteer job… now Lu has a car again, so……….
Mikeyj about 11 years ago
I love Greg’s work , but, his continuity is sometimes a bit sketchy 9_9 < rolls eyes
gkid about 11 years ago
I thought Luann started out volunteering @the library with the kids, reading storiesto them in appropriate costume for storiesbeing read. Gunther did incredibly goodcostumes for her. Then came the day they hiredher. So entered the car into her life. Andnow we have cycled back, to the beginning.Does this also mean The Gunther is gone (from thelibrary, too?too?

I’m guessing Luann will let Bernie’s snark sail right past her as she buckles down to moaning about her need for help finding a new job at a time when money is becoming more important (with college in prospect, she needs to save as much as she can).

I thought she was volunteering at the library.

She could go work at Weenie World…

Bern, you don’t kick someone when they’re down!

From the two outfits we see her wearing today, we see that Quill’s Boomerang has been tossed and didn’t come back. Maybe this is a sign that she will spend the next few story arcs worrying not about boys but about money. Since the economy of Pitt seems to be centered on Weenie World, you would think that would be the default employer, but as others have expressed, we may see Luann driving TJ’s lunch wagon instead. I truly hope not, because the less we see TJ in this strip, the better.
reedkomicks Premium Member about 11 years ago
So much for Bernice showing her human side. She should be hugging Luann.
TORAD_07 about 11 years ago
EXCUSE ME… That was a volunteer job. When did it go paid? Anyone know?
Perhaps, she was referring to the funding for the program itself. I’m sure there were other costs, besides Lu’ “potential salary.”
TORAD_07 about 11 years ago
“And awwaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyy we go!”
Game on for Lu vs. Bern in the GC room! This should prove entertaining! Round 1 to Bern, though…

Miss Haaaallllper connected with the job market? Placing all these teens in nice little jobs and doing psychoanalysis? And in a 7-12 school with paper records. Riiiigggghhhhtt as BC once said. This encounter is the result of a nice little plot device, so that’s fine. But let me know when teens go to school to get jobs – like schools have the time, staff, and money to do that.

Bern looks older and older. I guess this marks the move to the college years or the real world.
ewalnut about 11 years ago
I thought Luann was working as a volunteer (for free).
luann1212 about 11 years ago
Oh come on this is supposed to be a funny comic! She is Luann’s BFF. Most Bff’s know all, or most of your faults, but love you anyway. She will help Luann, as she has since the comic started.

Hey Bernie! Wanna have some FUN?
Well, WAIT ‘Til Lu’s FINISHED with Her Usual WHINING (Probably about Wednesday) THEN point out that Her STUPID Boomerang Necklace is MISSING.

What happened to the QUILL going to school in the USA storyline? He was going to live with Gunther and his family, remember?
Argy.Bargy2 about 11 years ago
Not everyone who needs a job to help pay for future community college or whatever can afford to wait until summer. In Florida, there are thousands of high school kids bagging groceries at Publix and Winn-Dixie to earn money during the school year.
Argy.Bargy2 about 11 years ago
I was starting to like Bernice when she showed sympathy for the scared freshman. But now that she’s showing her contempt for Luann, I realize I made a mistake in thinking that Bernice had a compassionate side. And I’m sorry to see that Luann turned to her for help. Luann should have been able to turn to Miss Phelps. It’s unlikely that a student counselor intern would be allowed, or able, to provide help in finding a job. Go back to helping freshmen find their lockers, Bernice.

As if she’s the only one. Oh, wait, that’s right. Bernice is perfect. Sarcasm is the weapon of those who are perfect. Right?

I had no idea she was actually making money reading stories to kids.

“I guess my first surprise was that Luann was getting paid for that library job. I thought it was a volunteer kind of thing.”.It was a volunteer job. It morphed into a paid job as a set up for today’s joke. That happens in comics.
live2read about 11 years ago
Not true. Luann has also griped to her about how plain-looking she is and how she’d like to look like one of those impossibly beautiful, stick-thin models in her fashion magazines.

Sounds about right to me all the Obama money has run out and so the library has to cut back since all it really is is a place for homeless people to hang out during the day

Serious Q: Should you go to an adviser who has never herself/himself encountered the problem? Bernice seems never to have looked for a job. Is she qualified to advise Luann?*Serious Q Corollaries: Can you be a substance abuse counselor if you aren’t an ex-addict? A marriage counselor if you’ve never married? A correctional counselor if you’ve never done time?*Or are these all just “human” problems that any competent counselor should be able to handle?
The Old Wolf about 11 years ago
It was a snarky comment, but typical Bern. And Luann knows that, because she’s heard thousands of them in her bedroom before. I’m hoping Bernice steps up to the plate and uses what skills she has to help her longtime best friend.

no, that was Aaron …^^There’s no dingoes in Hawaii, Aaron fell into a volcano while he was texting
EricPost about 11 years ago
So Luann didn’t even try to look, she just assumed she couldn’t get a job and ran asking for help???
JayBluE about 11 years ago
Exactly! And they do that sort of thing on the news, celebrity “shows” and sports media, all the time, the piecing together what they want others to see, or what it seems others would more readily perceive… – And also, we’re reading words from two dimensional characters… And Greg favors using this gag a lot, but it doesn’t mean that it’s only meant from sarcasm or elitism…. it’s just Greg setting up the joke, just as he did since the early days (which are now running as “Luann Againn”, here on GoComics, where there’s further reference for people to see this, as Lu has always made an opening for others to make a quick joke, only because she phrases things the way that she does. It’s the way that Greg prefers, and as he usually states, his characters come from a part of his personality…). And as Ken and some others have mentioned, best friends and even siblings may “rip” on each other, but it’s only in certain moments, and you know they’re just “teasing”, whether male or female. When it comes down to it, real friends and siblings may joke and tease, but always are there for the person, when it really matters!

It’s no fun not having a job, and I should know, I spent five months looking for a new job after I was let go from my movie theater job.
JayBluE about 11 years ago
Bernie is a boy’s name. ^Oh, yeah? What about “Ronnie” for Veronica for starters? Or “Terry” for Theresa, “Sam” for Samantha?….
PMark about 11 years ago
Who says Bernice’s, “I know”, has to be sarcastic?
Bernice is Luann’s best friend. She knows Luann better than anyone else. She is also more up to date on Luann’s problems than anyone else. So if Luann has a problem, would you not expect Bernice to be the very first person to know about it?
Is it not feasible that Bernice has already heard through the counselor’s grapevine that the library is cutting back on all part-time positions? She would immediately know the impact that would have on her closest friend, Luann.
So what better thing for Bernice to say when Luann comes to her with her problem than a gentle, “I know”?
ORMouseworks about 11 years ago
“I thought it was a volunteer kind of thing.” (Luann’s library job). I did too; maybe nothing was really mentioned about a possible salary? ;)
ORMouseworks about 11 years ago
“Does anybody read all these comments?” Yep, I do. They’re entertaining, and some commentators are really witty. Besides I might miss something…ARRRRGGGHHH! ;)
LovesAmos about 11 years ago
By the time I was Luann’s age, I already knew how to job hunt and write a resume. Started working at an early age. But then, child labor laws weren’t as strict back then either.
TORAD_07 about 11 years ago
Hey everyone, just saw they had Brad staring in today’s 9 Chickweed Lane. I did not think they sent characters to different strips like that.
You never give up, do ya Levi? ;-)
ORMouseworks about 11 years ago
I agree with you…vocational training in high schools should be reinstated. They are not available in this area, and so those who want to work for a living doing jobs that are essential for the community have to attend classes at the local community college. It’s sad it costs so much money to do so… ;)
ORMouseworks about 11 years ago
“Anyway, there were no jewelry-snatching occurrences in my HS.” Someone stole my wallet during PE class…too bad they only got a penny… ;)

Poor Luann, she’s a little like me, always a dollar short or a day late

I didn’t think high school guidance counselors acted as employment agencies. Don’t students get after-school jobs by reading “help wanted ads” on bulletin boards (physical or on-line), by searching Internet postings, or even by going into fast-food chains and other service outlets and asking whether they’re hiring?
seismic-2 Premium Member about 11 years ago
As for where Quill is, he will be graduating from high school in Oz shortly before Christmas on account of the academic calendar there. so he is either (1) spending all his time applying to colleges, or (2) writing term papers and studying like mad for finals in order to graduate, or (3) enjoying “senioritis” by drinking Foster’s all night and passing out. But yeah, the “dingo” hypothesis can’t be ruled out, either.

It still counts! It’s not whether it’s a “nickname” or a “diminutive” or any other category…. it still is a short name for the other, where it becomes unisex…. Sam is short for Samantha, whether it’s a “nickname” or “diminutive”, or a variation…

The Four Seasons song “Ronnie” is about a girl named such….

And if the person answers to that name, they are therefore acknowledging it’s use as their name….

“Frankie” (as in the song “Frankie and Johnny were lovers…”) can be the diminutive for the female names Frances or Francine or Francesca, rather than for the male names Francis or Franklin.
