The Born Loser by Art and Chip Sansom for September 29, 2013
Transcript:
The Born Loser by Art & Chip Sansom Gladys: Hello, Brutus? It's me, Gladys. Gladys: I was shopping, and when I got back to the car, I realized I had somehow locked my keys inside... Gladys: I can't get in the car, so you're going to have to take a cab and bring me your keys. Brutus: That won't be necessary - with a little ingenuity, I can unlock the car without bringing the keys to you! Gladys: And just want do you have in mind? Brutus: Go stand by the car and point your phone at the driver's door... Brutus: Now, I'll hold my keys up to my phone and press the beeper - the car will think I'm standing there and open the door!

That would work if the remote control used an audio signal instead of rf signal.

Hey Prof, it is available. It is called OnStar!

And the brainlessness continues…

Ok so OnStar uses satellite to know where you are, and cellular network (proprietary) to connect with OnStar. My guess is they send a “hidden text message” to the car’s onboard computer, and that unlocks the door. (Similar to the text your cellphone provider sends after you’ve listened to your voice mail – you should never see the text message, but, it arrives, tells your phone “remove the icon”, and then auto deletes itself.)

Why not have the keyless remote entry pad on a separate keyring, along withj an extra key for the criminally inept?

ROFL now that would be awesome, to open your car by phone, oh wait I think there is an app for that too

With my 2013 Hyundai, I can lock, unlock, & start it with my cell phone. Similar to OnStar, but called Hyundai BluLink. It also allows my GPS to be programmed for a trip, hundreds of miles away, by a person with a computer that has my password.

Eh Brutus, given your car’s age and condition (reference 09/08 strip, http://www.gocomics.com/the-born-loser/2013/09/08#.Ukj34hBShIo), does it even have keyless-entry?

I can’t say this enough: Get a magnetic “Hide a Key”.
