There were still some great strips after that, but they weren’t as frequent, because Schulz had exhausted so much material by then. For example, in his later years, Schulz talked about how difficult it had become for him to come up with a new strip every fall with Lucy pulling away the football. Bill Watterson’s standards were so high, that he exhausted his material after creating only 8 1/2 years’ worth of Calvin and Hobbes (ten years minus his two sabbaticals).
