Some years ago, I saw a box labeled “USDA Pasteurized American Process Cheese Type Food Product”. The contents were a pale yellow color, and I (gratefully) have no idea what it tasted like.
I have an article from 2006 how food chemists wanted to add flavors to string cheese to make it more appealing to kids. Originally tried strawberry but the pH was too low and the cheese wouldn’t have the same texture. So they tried other “fun” flavors – bubble gum, watermelon, cotton candy, green apple – and appropriately colored (pink, light turquoise, red, lime green). Can’t say I’ve seen any of these come to market, wonder why . . .
You really have to define “par”… it depends on priorities and values. Just saying that I don’t pity them. They’d like computers and a few other comforts, but they don’t know what they’re missing, when it comes to fancy clothes and the like.
Grandma’s love isn’t subpar … and it sounds like Trout’s mother loves her too, in her strange fashion. And they have a strong friendship with each other. How many people would jump to trade luxury for love?
On a global scale, for perspective…. they have warm beds and a roof to keep them dry. That puts them in the upper 25%.
They eat at least one or two meals every day. The food may not be as nutritious or tasty, or plentiful, as would be ideal… but they’re not starving. And they have clean clothes, a school, books, TV… to most of the world that makes them rich.
I know, I know… we’re talking about a comparison with their peers…. but I believe that it’s love and a grateful spirit that make people happy, not a quest for “better.”
I probably don’t own a lot of things you may think barely sufficient…. but my life, in my eyes, is anything but “sub-par.”

We had a bear ransack our campsite once. Ate a 5-pound block of Velveeta cheese. One sick bear, that.

I’d be surprised if Agnes doesn’t try to pass the cheese off as something else, in hopes of selling it. I already see the gears turning.

Poor girls. They’ve never seen anything in their lives that wasn’t subpar.
