This week’s strip was a lazy attempt at a tired stereotype. In fact, had this strip taken a similar approach with any other religious or ethnic group, there would likely be scores of angry readers.
The “back-handed compliment” that Jewish men are usually doctors remains an ignorant generalization. What’s next? Jokes about men of color, Muslims, Italians, Latinos? Why not characterize Boyd as a flaming swishing gay man? Because it’s wrong and so was this week’s strip.
This type of humor may have been acceptable in the past, but it’s simply insensitive today. And that’s not just political correctness, it is common decency.
Maybe it’s okay for, say Woody Allen, to make such jokes, but he does it in a more self-deprecating fashion. But if Woody made a similar observation about any other group, he’d be in big trouble.
Tolerance is one thing, but this week’s strip unfortunately took the “low road” in perpetuating a dated and incorrect stereotype. John and his collaborators should be ashamed of this lapse in sensitivity.
It’s aal the standing, and not moving.Simultaneously, trying to read. Yet pay attention; never-know when an expected Guest might unexpectedly not stop-by . . . . . . . yes It can be tiring.
@charlie tuba: yes, correct, Saturday evening it’s havdalah, a nice ritual to say farewell to Shabat and wish us a good work-week – a gite woch! Actually with a very special “fire-candle”. But can you imagine Lila learning anything, let alone Ivrit???? Nah…. stick to the martinis and the buckets of icecream I’d say..
@r0sc0e: … you know, I’ve never seen any sign that Lila’s mother is Jewish. And Lila goes to church with Drew… are you sure? Because – as you say, she’d be Jewish and the guy could have dated her all right.. not that anybody ever will as far as I see in this strip. I’d love to see her dating some nice guy for a while…….
As far as the characters in the strip, yes, Lila’s mother is Jewish, but Lila was raised Christian. It’s usually the other way around but I thought I’d switch it up a bit so I can include church, priest, and confessional gags. I’ve never found temple that amusing. And yes, I’ve been many times.
