Do not try that in Europe: Unfair Dismissal, it is a part of Employee protection.
Something the US could & should learn. There are also enough safeguards for the employer to get rid of the person who should be let go. So everyone has some form of protection!
I’ve wondered: when readers comment, do they come back later to see if there are replies to their comment? The old site had an option to be notified by email of responses, but I haven’t found similar here.
I remember talking with co-workers about some of the ways workers are treated better in Europe; that time it was about their vacation time and maternity leave. But what can we do about it when the employers here can look at us and say “You don’t want to take the job on these terms? Fine, there’s a line of people outside that need this job to support their families that will.”
If it’s any comfort, Sue, now in HR, overruled Rita’s dismissal of Dawkins for lack of grounds. Sue spent a long time in the trenched and hasn’t forgotten.
@Jean… even in a ‘right to work’ state, you can’t really fire, or let an employee go, without some grounds. Yes, those grounds can be the lack of business. And yes, the company has to pay unemployment for that person. …As far as people lying, do you think it’s just employers who lie? Ha, not so. Employees are just as bad. And I’ve seen that from both sides of the desk/counter/wall. People lie when it suits them. Karma will get them in the end.…I’m glad Sue could override Rita, though. If Rita goes on a rant, she’ll fire everyone, and then where would this strip be? Rita’s fun, but I think the variety of characters makes the strip better.
When bosses say things like that, you just want in the worst way to see the situation reversed, and have them have to scramble to keep their job with no morale. Money really puts some people out of touch.
The one workplace here that seems to have no safeguards (and my knowledge is only from hearsay) is our education system. What I HAVE observed are teachers who are Union spoke-persons using incorrect grammar and worse diction. Most of my grandchildren are already finished with school but if I were now raising my kids, I would refer to do it myself (as the subjects in which I’m lacking math skills are all available online in teaching guides).
So does Rita base he managing style on WWE boss Vince McMahon or, more specifically, the tyrannical "Mr. McMahon’ character he plays on TV? “YOU’REEEEEEEEE FIIIIIIIIIRRRREDDDDDDD!!!!!”
