Rather than risk capture in a losing sea battle- King Olaf Tryiggvason of Norway jumped into the Baltic Sea and his armor dragged him to the bottom! Xuanzang, a 7th century monk, made a 17 year trip from China to India to retrieve original Buddhist texts. The book he wrote tells us much of what we know today about ancient India! It took 10,000 laborers 25 years to build the Royal city of Madnvat Al-Zahra in 10th century Spain- which had running water, lighted streets, libraries and a mosque with a golden roof, marble walls and a fountain- of shimmering mercury!
