let it go if it comes back its your forever, if it doesn’t come back it was never yours to begin with (or an eagle carried it off one or the other) but if it sits on your couch, eats your food and doesn’t even know you let it go in the first place, you either married it or gave birth to it
I have only watched the hawk cams with any regularity (I like a good clear camera), but the parent birds build nest and hunt for local prey of appropriate size as hatchlings grow and fledge. Fish or mammal is more a matter of circumstance than taste.
Actually happened to my wife, she released a baby bunny only to have a hawk swoop down and fly away with it. Our 3 year old grandson was watching so we told him the nice hawk took the baby bunny home to it’s mommy. He bought it we thought until he was 5 and asked us if the bird really took the bunny to his mommy. Smart kid.
At a rest stop on the alcan highway, they tell the story of a couple in a motorhome that let their Chihuahua out to tinkle. The eagle that lived in the tree swooped down and took it away. Then they say, “I guess he wanted Mexican food today!”, like it was funny.35 years later, I heard they still tell the same story.

If eagles are like pigeons, then once it’s digested she’ll probably get some of it back.
