Janis: Every day, I see this old person in the mirror, and I don't like it!
Janis: Then I remind myself, there are procedures to improve my looks!
Janis: What about you? Don't you want your wife to look young and pretty?
Arlo: Not if she isn't really!

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Even if he needs help saying it

Well, there’s a new wrinkle…

@Fairportfan: There are times you need to say “the right thing”.
And there are times when you need to speak The Truth And Nothing But. I think this is such a time.
When a beautiful older woman strives to look ‘young and pretty’, the end result is usually disastrous.

Terrible choice of words, there, Arlo…
Olddog1 about 11 years ago
Try “still pretty at any age.” No longer either is not a good way to insure your safety.

She apparently has little respect for a man who would want a wife that looks like her.Silly.I’ve been married over 30 years and like my kids, as long as she’s healthy, she’s perfect! :)C.

I disagree, Arlo is saying the right thing..If she goes through with it, she wouldn’t be his Janis.

Women are like a fine wine, both get better (and more expensive) with age.

After 41 years, my husband still calls me his ‘pretty lady’, and that means more to me than any procedure could! (Even though I have never been ‘pretty’!)

Like Janis said, she’s doing it for herself, not for Arlo. I can understand why Arlo isn’t particularly comfortable with that. At their age if she doesn’t think she looks good then how does she feel about his looks?

Uh oh! :-!

Janis is fishing for “permission” to do something utterly ridiculous and selfish that won’t give her what she wants in the end. And she’s putting Arlo in an impossible position. If he supports her she’ll get mad because she’ll think he’s implying she needs plastic surgery, and if he doesn’t support her, he comes off the loser, too.

“Janis, I love you just the way you are.” That’s the formula. Lerner and Lowe said it beautifully way back in the 50’s when they wrote “How To Handle A Woman” for their famous musical, Camelot.

Not when it is fake. Enough of these ‘procedures’ and they look like a space alien. They ‘tuck’ until their ears meet on the back of their head.
belcherman about 11 years ago
Um, Arlo, I’ve been meaning to speak to you about that nose of yours.
jadoo823 about 11 years ago
…Janis should look at it the way I do – I’ve EARNED each and EVERY ONE of these wrinkles, they are MINE…having said that, though, it is her body – if she wants to do something about it, more power to her. (I may have earned the wrinkles, but I don’t know why I have these jowls – I’ve always had them, and if I was going to have any work done, it would be on them, but that has been a lifelong personal issue, not an aging one…) (It’s all so subjective – my ex would say “but what about your nose?”) ( – I LIKE my nose…) :)….

At least he didn’t say, “Sure. Who did you have in mind?”

All of you are right, but a woman should reserve the right to do as she pleases
Gokie5 about 11 years ago
All I can say is, I agree that “work” (if extensive) rarely makes anyone look better. People who dye their hair a fakey color look awful, IMHO, or at least fakey. I admire Robert Redford for aging as he really is, not into some smoothed-up old twit. However, whenever I see an elderly person who is dolled up like a clown, I say, “If she’d happy, I’m happy!”

Best thing men and women can do to look good, is watch their weight.
Varnes about 11 years ago
A woman can do what she likes with her body, of course. But her man has no obligation to like the change, or enjoy it. Here’s why I’m single…After the operation, every time she asked me if she looked pretty I’d probably say, well you used to…..
slsharris about 11 years ago
If men didn’t make such a fuss over younger women, there wouldn’t be an issue.

I ran into an acquaintance not long ago and didn’t even recognize her. She looked like someone had thrown her features in the air and they’d landed randomly—I’m sure she paid through the nose for the procedure, but it was horrifying. She’d had a lovely face and it did not do her justice but the thing was done now.

Can’t blame Arlo for wanting to keep it real.By the way, I just joined and I am honored to be among such sincere, thoughtful commenters.

Love seeing how intelligent some comics have become. Also enjoy reading the intelligent comments. Please, carry on.

the correct answer is “you already are”!

I dated a guy who turned out to be cheap and wanted to tell me how much I should spend on myself. I only have my hair cut and colored every 6 to 8 weeks. I don’t spend a lot on clothes and makeup. I went gray early and Igot a wonderful reaction to my getting rid of the gray hair. He seemed to feel that anything that made ME fell better was unimportant — so so long as HE approved. More, he made me feel that I wasn’t worth the modest expense.
I don’t date him any more.

Yeah, I’m married 30 years and have said similar things and definitely gotten her facial reaction from my wife……

It’s really weird being the same age as old people.
