Transcript:
Homer's Roman Empire Life continues I began to suspect that the dark alley wasn't the way to the marketplace as I was told... There was nowhere to run. All I could do was tremble in fear, hoping for a miracle. Then suddenly... Homer: ? ...There was no alley! The trembling wasn't just me...it was the ground! Then out from the rubble, a swarm of rats ran past me as fast as they could, away from their city homes. That told me it wasn't over, that something deadly was still coming. So without hesitation... ...I followed them. "Now leaving fabulous Pompeii Come back soon!" Homer: That's when things really started to get crazy... Bert: "Started"? Duncan: Sadly, yes...

The quality of artwork on panels 5, 6 and 7 is incredible…Miller, he’s something else…..Somehow he makes fantasy seem real….The man’s spooky…

Wiley provides one of the best drawn modern comics, but Hal Foster (Prince Valiant) is the best I can recall. The Fantagraphic reprints are very good, but still not as great as the half-page format of the original Sunday editions. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prince_Valiant

In panel seven, I can hear Curly from the Three Stooges going “Woop woop woop woop woop woop woop woop woop woop woop woop woop woop woop woop woop!”

Night-Gaunt49 meant 1880’s, there’s a typo.
I rather poo-poo any suggestion of any particular insight into such rare events as catastrophic volcanic eruptions by such as rats and snakes, they are just responding to local conditions. In the weeks before the four huge explosions of 1883-08-27, “the volcano released huge plumes of steam and ash” [Wikipedia], sufficient to explain a serpentine exodus. It’s not like moving toward the shore would have done the snakes any good, the final eruption must have killed all higher life forms on the island.

Next to last panel ….reminds me of the Mel Brooks movie “History Of The World Part 1” U’s and V’s …interchangeable ….literally trying to read that makes me laugh!

I well remember the one hundred and eighty-eighth century. It was (will be) when I decided (will decide) to be reincarnated in reverse.

People often ask me if my cats act strangely before one of our California earthquakes…Define “strangely” for a cat.

A feature of English grammar: sequence of tenses. Latin also has it. Bulgarian does not..
