When in High School I told my math teacher the following joke. I thought it was hilarious at the time, but over the years I’ve matured a bit. In any event:
Why does a mathematician never get constipated? They can work anything out with a pencil. ( # 2 pencil, of course.)
My kids started the “I hate math” chant last year, but they’re pretty good at it, so this year I put them in a math tutoring group where they explain concepts, give them different ways to solve a problem, and they can hang out with kids of all ages (so they can socialize a bit and see that math can be fun). They like it much better now and think it’s great that math is not a big deal at school, even when they’re moving onto new concepts.
The only kind of math I ever did well was logic (anything that makes sense to me is fairly easy to remember, otherwise I have always had a completely dismal memory.
I worked for decades in HVAC plumbing and even electrical, but actual construction (even codes for the most part) make sense. And though there are many, I found that Chicago Buidiing Code was the most comprehensive (except for State of CA- and I DON’T want to deal with that).
I use simple math every day. Total the groceries, figure out the cost of 1.6 kg of bananas at 79¢ a pound. (yes. That is how the store posts the prices). And don’t forget the GST on deli items and PST on magazines..See. Simple math..
