I see that Horace paid his brain bill this month. :-) (I just received my copy of “Year of the Horse”—I LOVE it!) The early strips in the book indicate that Horace’s human-level intelligence—and Melody’s (and perhaps Sine’s, too), I infer—is maintained by some agency (Earthly? alien? supernatural/magical?) that bills Horace each month; when he paid it late one month, he went down on all fours and went from speaking to neighing in mid-sentence. That agency may also confer upon him the ability to hold and manipulate objects with his hooves, as well as live among humans without them noticing, “Hey, what’s a horse doing delivering stand-up comedy, driving a car, and eating in restaurants with his marefriend?!” :-)
