With our old dog, we learned that chasing him did no good. You’d lose sight of him inside of a minute, and you’d do nothing but catch distant glimpses of him after that. Two hours later he’d be lying on the porch, pretty as you please. The new one…. I doubt he could find his way home. And I really am concerned that he could get run over if he got out (the other one had good sense about cars. He wouldn’t cross the road with a car coming if you tried to drag him)
My folks had a beagle who would occasionally get out. When he did, he always had the same route. He would head up to one end of their (very quiet) street, cross to the other side, head back down to the other end, cross again and return home (they lived in the middle of the block). If you chased him, he only did it faster, but he would always follow that route.
My dog got loose once and was looking in the windows at a house about 5 miles away. The lady in the house called the sheriff to report a dog starring in her windows.
When my dog gets loose, she runs because she loves for you to chase her. One time when she got out, the smartest thing I did was to sit on the side of the road. She eventually came looking for me and then I was able to snag her and lock her back in the house! She did NOT get any treats for the rest of the day after that!

@TeresaLove your story. I believe we all have guardian angels, why not animals too? So glad your dog is okay.
