This GW prevented some 18-wheelers from getting up a very low, very short hill for a while tonight. High today about 35, low tonight in the teens. – North central Texas.
I prefer science to be based on proof, not consensus. Until there is incontrovertible proof of anything (i.e., there is no argument left), I’ll be skeptical. Copernicus and Galileo were “deniers” of the consensus, too.
“….. I live to keep my carbon foot print on mother earth as minimal as possible.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~That is my philosophy, too. I hate being a part of this throw-away society.I guess nobody knows for sure one way or the other, but I can’t ignore the fact that I live in Florida, on the Gulf of Mexico. I believe that if GW is really happening Florida will be the first to disappear. On the bright side, I hope, I, and my descendents, will be long dead. Regardless of our differing opinions, how could it hurt to try to defer it?
One small point. The “change” in temperatures… has never factored in the increase or decrease in solar activity. It too is on a cycle and effects things much more than us. That being said… the less pollution the better.
The punch line in the comic is true. It is a sensitive subject now. Here’s what I see is the crux of the argument. It’s not the amount of change that is occurring. In the past the planet has gone through greater changes than we see at present. What is different (and human influenced) is the rate of change. There is no evidence in the earth’s past of similar rates of climate change outside of a global disaster like an asteroid strike or a giant caldera like Yellowstone blowing up.On another point, the earth hasn’t been temperate over the whole planet since the America’s joined at Panama and caused the ocean currents to change patterns. The real problem isn’t going to be a planetary heat wave, but a planetary ice age if the current that presently keeps Europe warm gets shut down due to oceanic desalinization by the melting polar ice cap. Simply put, too much heat will cause it to freeze in the long run. We as a civilization are not in a position to handle either situation at present.That last sentence is my opinion.
Here’s a one-graphic-says-it-all from the web site you referred to:http://arctic.atmos.uiuc.edu/cryosphere/IMAGES/seasonal.extent.1900-2010.pngSo, either you don’t read well, or you’re lying. If you’re not a creationist, I suspect the former; if you are a creationist, the latter.
The comments on this week’s Sunday WofId merely prove the point made by the strip. The sides have been drawn so starkly that no one convinces anyone in the other camp.
I live in Virginia, where there’s a saying about the weather: if you don’t like it, just wait five minutes.
Attempting to change things that aren’t understood can be very dangerous – especially on a global scale.
