I just finished re-reading MY FAVORITE INTERVALS, by Victor Borge. Operas and orchestral works of the 18th and 19th century were entertainments that might be comparable to movies and theater shows of today. Some of the most famous and well-liked works were originally panned by critics for supposed immoral displays of social behavior and incomprehensible music. Bad critical reviews of that sort inevitably attracted crowds. Sometimes the theater managers wrote bad reviews of that sort themselves to boost attendance.
