@Nabuquduriuzhur -The drumming (jackhammer) is a mating thing. It’s to impress the “ladies” and call to them, showing their talents according to one of my bird books. It would also explain why it’s a periodic thing, and not constant.
The first time I heard it reverberating through my new home, I thought I was under attack!
We’ve had to have our big metal streetlight replaced twice through the years because of a ladderback woodpecker. It makes such a lovely racket when he pecks it!
Some years back there was a woodpecker hammering away on a transformer a power pole up the street. After about 5 minutes of this the transformer got mad and exploded. I sound like a bomb when it went off. I went up to where it happened after the power company replaced the transformer and found the chard remains of the bird.

Petrified wood doesn’t usually grow leaves (second panel).

Poor guy looks like he broke his pecker.

I always thought that woodpeckers pecked at a tree to get to insects. You learn something new every day.

The cordless hole saw made by Black & Pecker.

I always wondered why woodpeckers don’t get concussions. It ain’t natural for any animal to bang its head into a tree repeatedly.
Worse off than a woodpecker with a hangover.

I’m not sure why squirrels gnaw at the garage door frame either, but they sure do. It’s not wood, but a fiber-cement composition.

Must have wandered into the Petrified Forest.

Maybe that should be, “…I’ll peck you a tonsillectomy!”
