When reading the Book you have the advantage of having the “Special Effects” in your head. Jackson had to “Show them to you” and, sadly, that takes a while.
But there will always be people working in theaters on Christmas Day. Remember, that’s the day that Jewish people eat Chinese food and go to the movies. So they will be open.
@ghostkeeperMany of us work jobs open 7/24/365 a year and offer to work the Holidays so our co-workers with families can spend time together. It is a Global world and our today is some elses tomorrow or yesterday. I will be working the eve of the 24’th 25’th and 1’st. till 0600 hrs. And looking forward to reading WD on my lunch break.
The shortest Christmas break I ever had when working an out of the home job was when I worked in a department store. We were there till late Christmas Eve, and due back the day after. It was retail and that’s how it works. Unfortunately, at that time my parents lived four hours away, and I wasn’t able to join by brothers who drove up there for a few days. I spend Christmas with a friend and his family, but felt so out of place that year,
The other sources are scattered. “The Quest For Erebor” is in the book UNFINISHED TALES. It was originally supposed to appear in RETURN OF THE KING, after the Ring was destroyed. Gandalf and the Hobbits were still in Gondor, and he told them a lot of background stuff leading up to THE HOBBIT. A truncated version of the information is in the indices.

Why would you want to? Take a short, fun, interesting book and turn it into 3 long, boring movies – nice move.

Do a BBC Sherlock marathon with Cumberbatch and Freeman. Sherlock is so good they won’t see Smaug until after New Years.

Get him some of the old movies. Tell him to close his eyes and make believe that he and Kathy are the heroes of the movies.
