I don’t like gift cards. To me, they say the giver didn’t care enough about the recipient to take the trouble to select something. The wrong size, or color? At least they tried.
However, when it comes to my grandkids, after several tragic bloopers, I finally realized that if somebody had given me a fistful of dollars when I was 14, I’d have been over the moon, so now I go with the flow.
I had fun shopping for the grandkids until they reached their teens. At least they are all turning into nice adults. I’m very pleased that at their age, I don’t expect to be a ggma soon. (Boys= 24, 22 ,20, 10 and girls 17, 18). I DO expect that during my lifetime though ;-)
I don’t give gift cards and hate to get them. Fees, on both ends, stores that one does not shop at and having to squeeze them into my wallet and remember to use them.
We buy gifts only for the 2 young nieces. The niece and nephews in their 20’s we mail checks. We have convinced siblings, siblings in law and my mom (the entirety of our families) we do not trade gifts as it was stupid. I buy a sweater for my sister at Sears (and am not sure it was not the same one as last year) with the gift card from returning my gift from her last year and she did the same for me. Waste of energy and gasoline. Husband and I buy whatever small things we want during the year and set them aside for gifts. (This year I bought 3 books on Lousia Alcott and one on Henry VII, discounted, and that was my gifts.

I always say, you don’t realize how little you know about someone until you shop for a gift for them. I give the grandkids a small gift and money.

They wouldn’t have all this stuff to return if they didn’t buy commercial junk to start with.
