A hat and boots do not make a cowboy. I was born and raised on a large cattle ranch. I spent a good part of my life working there. I was never a cowboy though. Just a ranch hand. My brother, like my dad and granddad, on the other hand has always been a cowboy and will be to the day he dies. It’s not only a way of life, but a different mindset. He is in his mid 50s now and is still horse back almost everyday of the week. Many times before sunrise. While being a cowboy can be hard work a lot of the time; most true cowboys live a life that most can only dream of.
The great Loius L’Amour tells us cowboys sang as they rode around the cattle at night. The riding was to look for and drive away predators. The singing was partly to avoid startling the cattle and causing a stampeed. The cattle could hear them coming and weren’t spooked..The rhythm of the songs seems to match what their horses would make by walking.
Boy walks up to man:“Are you a real cowboy?”“Yes I am. See this hat? "“Yes, sir”“It’s a cowboy hat. I’m a REAL cowboy. See this belt buckle?”“Yes,sir”" It’s a cowboy belt buckle. I’m a REAL cowboy. See these tennis shoes?"“Yes,sir.”" I ain’t a bleeping truck driver!"
As I walked out in the streets of LaredoAs I walked out in Laredo one dayI spied a young cowboy wrapped all in white linenWrapped in white linen as cold as the clay
Oh, beat the drum slowly and play the fife lowlySing the dead march as you carry me alongTake me to the valley then lay the sod o’er meI’m a young cowboy and I know I’ve done wrong
I see by your outfit that you are a cowboyThese words he did say as I boldly walked byCome sit down beside me and hear my sad storyGot shot in the breast and I know I must die
Go fetch me some water a cool cup of waterTo cool my hot lips then the poor cowboy saidBefore I return his spirit had left himHad gone to his Maker the cowboy was dead
Oh, beat the drum slowly and play the fife lowlySing the dead march as you carry me alongTake me to the valley then lay the sod o’er meI’m a young cowboy and I know I’ve done wrong

If you can’t be a good cowboy poet, you can at least look like one, Earl.

Does the government still subsidize cowboy poetry? It would be a great second income for Earl & Opal.
