Mom, my husband does the same exact thing. I have had this conversation many, many, many times. After over 30 years of marriage he finally confessed that he doesn’t like too many new dishes close together. I enjoy cooking new dishes all the time. It took him this long to speak up.
This is why the series ended. Mom snapped. Her garden was very lovely that year. Everyone wondered what her secret was. She planted tiger lillies and tended them with loving care.
Calvin, don’t do like I did once(when a youngster). I commented that we had had a particular dish 3 Saturdays in a row for lunch. So, my father, commented back: So, you don’t like what we have for lunch, we can fix that !’ For the next two Saturdays, we had a meal I would not wish on my worst enemy. After the second, my father asked what I thought about today’s and last Saturday’s lunch and if I harbored anymore objection to what was served in the house? I remarked that I no longer harbored any objections and never again said anything regarding what was served unless it was a compliment ! !
Years ago, my adopted step-son found out about Calvin and Hobbs and thought it would be a good way to mess with me. I told him, “I know what you’re planning, I can see into your future.” How’s that, he asked… “I’ve got the books, I know what’s going to happen.” His momentary lapse into colorful explicative were rather shocking but quite amusing.
He would not be eating for a week or so if he did that or would be picking him self off the floor. That kind of attitude is not even funny in the comics. Just my take on it. Disrespect to his mother is not funny at all.
Does anyone know anything about Watterson’s private life? Is he married with children? Only a parent with experience could have come up with this strip.
When i was growing up my siblings and i didn’t have a choice of eat or don’t eat. It was always “finish your plate before you leave the table.” Now that i’m older i can eat stuff i didn’t like when i was younger.

That’s what my mom always said. Of course, she had 7 kids to feed, 4 boys who ate like vengeance included.

My son used to do that. I told him he could have what he liked when he grew up and could cook. Now, at age 25, he does and I get to complain.

Calvin should remember the revenge mantra of the harried parents of bad children everywhere: “live long enough to be a burden to your adult children”

My parents answer was, eat what’s served or NOT, but you’re not getting anything else to eat. Subsequently, I ate what was served.

Funny, I thought Calvin would like gunk off boots. He liked the idea of having monkey heads for dinner.

Give the little brat a spanking he’ll never forget! But that won’t happen, this is a comic strip, not real life.
