Aarrrgg! Whoooooo... Take it from me, bro, if you got legs like these... And you want any type of definition in your quads and hams... You gotta go high weight, low reps.
Yes, 159 kB do have an impact:a) 159 kB multiplied by ten avatars of that kind multiplied by 100.000 readers of this comic are 159.000.000 kB = 159 GB.b) My mobile phone contract allows me 300 MB per month, that are 10 MB per day. Now calculate …
Another point of view: I want to read the comics and the comments, but the complete data to view this page is 20 times bigger than the comic itself has. And: this one avatar “picture” is bigger, then the comic GIF.
But isn’t it so for billions of websites? You always load many commercials, banners, “you won an ipad!” thingies, etc.
And it’s not the avatar of my life story after all. All websites that allow avatars, signature graphics etc. for users (which are reloaded every time the page is viewed) also have size limitations for them.

Gif animations were already popular as avatars when I bought my first internet connection in 1998.
Although I do prefer to read comics (and everything) the old fashioned way, on paper.
