Too many people don’t start looking for their next job until their unemployment has run out.

I hope, come election time, some of our current representatives wind up like that for the stupidity they’ve shown.

Not necessarily. .get hurt at work or hit by a car. use up all your sick time. then all your vacation time. Work can’t pay you when the benefits run out. the best work can do for you – is take you back when you’re all healed and better..so you go on EI (employment insurance – used to be called unemployment insurance). Including the waiting period, that’s only 52 weeks. they’re not going to pay forever. So then it’s welfare. .and if you’re lucky – after about 5-7 years – you might be healthy enough to go back to work. .I have met those people. They are so very happy to be able to get back to work.

I hear you, Turtle. And to corroborate what says msowards said, my weekly gross on UI was roughly two days worth of take-home on my last job. Had I let the government take taxes out of UI (ridiculous, but true: UI is taxable), my net would probably have been equal to one day’s take-home from my last job. And I’ve been looking for work for eight months now, I’ve burned out my state UI, and Congress can’t decide what to do about EUC. The Democrats want it both ways: The economy’s GREAT!!! But we need to extend EUC. The Republicans just want to know where the Dems are going to get the money to pay for EUC; but the Dems won’t answer that. Plus, there’s the equally valid question that if the economy is as good as the Dems say it is, why do we need EUC at all?Simply put, because government math, especially Dem math, since they control the WH and Senate, wouldn’t get them passed from first to second grade. The statistics they quote prove the adage that there are three types of lies; from least to most severe: Lies, damned lies, and statistics. For example, per government lies, I am no longer unemployed. How do they figure that? Because I’m no longer drawing UI, having burned it all out. Do the real math. Unemployment in the US is a lot closer to 15% than it is to 7%, a lot closer.

Speak for yourself asshole. Why don’t you live in an area with 18% unemployment like some of us where companies are going belly up.
