I think it’s a C-

After reading this strip a few times, I’m of the opinion that this is a brilliant strip. I see this getting cut out of newspapers or printed onto colour and pinned up in teacher’s lounges everywhere.

Like Nate, I’m not a fan of Mrs. Godfrey. She uses intimidation, shame-basing, scorn and other negative attitudes to motivate her poor students. I’d swear that she takes Nate’s poor academic performance personally, which might explain why Nate and Mrs. Godfrey are always at odds. They are two very different people, and in literary fashion, conflict is essential for fine comedy and good storytelling.

Nate is a very smart young man, but he is a very poor student. It is often when he applies himself and motivates himself (often fueled by negative attitudes, such as jealousy) is where he might excel.

Maybe, just maybe, if Mrs. Godfrey started working with Nate’s strengths (and maybe, just very gently stroke Nate’s overinflated ego – just a bit), we all might see a positive relationship between the two.

And to the cartoonist – I still fondly remember the bet between Gina and Nate for him to stay out of detention for a week. That story arc was RIVETING and had me waking up very early to read the next strip.

How come, in the last panel, Nate says “Guys! I actually passed!”? He’s passed a Social Studies worksheet one time. Actually, make that MORE than just one time. He’s passed Social Studies worksheets a lot of times. In fact, once, he even got a 98!

And, by the way, did Mrs. Godfrey just eat a popsicle a few minutes ago?
