Even the strip is in complete haiku. (In case any of you don’t know what a haiku is, it’s a Japanese poem with three lines that has five, seven and five syllables in each line.)

8 syllables in the second line, 6 in the last.

Best part is that’s in character for Paige.

How do you get six syllables in the last panel?

That only works if you pronounce poem as one syllable, which is kind of a stretch.

In Japanese, Haiku is unquestionably three syllables, so this flunks.

LegalEagle48 has it right: in American English, one syllable for ‘poem’ is valid (if not always preferred, according to Merriam-Webster Collegiate 10th ed.), and haiku would be two syllables.

I wonder if the pronunciation of poem is one of those distinctive regional variations….

The way I learned it, decades ago, it’s 3 lines of 17 syllables: 5-7-5 or 6-5-6. Maybe I learned it incorrectly or maybe the definition revisionists are at work.

WOW: some of you are so sharp – that you caught the comic was written in Haiku – and even catching that “poem” can be pronounced as “po-em” or “poem”!

Last year I was reading a forum about a global warming issue and they wanted a poem written in haiku. I added my 2-cents worth:

Wore a coat today.If there is global warmingThen how come I’m cold?

I should have checked the “bias-factor” before posting – because I got 100% thumbs-down…

I guess if you pronounce “poem” as just one syllable, this works. But I think for most people it’s po-em, no?
