I fail to see how Pacific Rim or Transformers are original. Pacific Rim was pretty much a parody of every old fashioned monster movie on the planet, and Transformers is pretty much just the Transformers franchise put into movie form (with varying success), and neither featured a good deal of creativity in their production (more Transformers than Pacific Rim, but point stands).

This isn’t to say they aren’t still good movies in their own right, nor that there aren’t original movies out there (Frozen is probably a good example, but I wouldn’t know, I haven’t seen it yet), I just find the two you listed to be poor examples.

In the end, cubefarmer’s only partly right. Hollywood still manages to produce an original film every now and then, but their overall originality has long been on the decline.

Yet they still keep making money, so they have to be doing something right…

They’re right about sequels not being as good as the originals.
