Wow! Greg’s first character (Before the idea for Luann came along) is “hanging it up!” Very poigniant moment…..– I’m sure that whenever he hears an alarm or a clock bell going off, he’s going to reach(out of force of habit) for the yardstick and automaticallly make a “tapping” motion to Knock Knute’s cap off… – I wonder if he’d still have that reaction if he runs into Knute in the Grocery Store?
Hope Mr. Fogarty finds happiness in his retirement. Maybe he will teach a course at the local college with Luann as a student. Meanwhile, will his ‘friendship’ with Miss Blipps continue?
“Yay! Day”“Forarty’s Final Finals”“Hard Habit To Break”“…No More Students’ Dirty Looks”“Commencement For Everyone”“Class Dismissed!”“From Faculty Lounge To Pool Lounge”or “Hey! Teacher! Leave Those Kids Alone!”
This would have been a great way for Greg Evans to use the strip if he wanted to announce his own retirement. However, since apparently he does not intend to retire yet, it will serve simply to answer the question of “What happened to Mr. Fogarty?” when the same group of students that he has taught every year at Pitt finally go off to college. And it raises the question of whether Aaron Hill will ever be erupted out of that volcano where he was sent after the 1986 strip we see in the flashback.
We used to sing a song we called “The Joy Boys Of Radio”. Stupid title but it went something like this:All — “We are the Joy Boys of radioooo, Hello, Hello, Hello, Hellooo.”Chanter — “There’s only one bar in town.”All — “BOOooooo.”Chanter — “It’s one mile long.”All — “Yeahhhhh”.Thereupon followed more stanzas of similar intellectual subjects.
I believe, with this group of seniors, that aside from maybe Tiff, they are happy for Mr. Fogarty. Keep in mind that these are characters and they are often created from a “group mentality” perspective. Almost all of us have a teacher like Mr. Fogarty in our past, and despite the things that we found odd about him, we more often than not remember our time with him with fondness.
“I’m RETIRING from Teaching at the End of the School Year, But I’m Taking a Job with the NSA. So REMEMBER, “Kiddies,” I’ll Always Be WATCHING!" -- Old Foghatery or Whatever the Heck This Guy’s Name Is.
I didn’t phrase that very well. What I meant was that we saw Aaron Hill in this 1986 flashback, and later on he was sent away. He moved to the volcano in late 2004.
“Bored of Education”?^Good one! But we don’t yet know if he was bored, or his “clock” was just giving him an alarm. Usually, when you put so much time into something, you never fully leave it. Your heart still moves you to “act and think” like you did, when you did it. That’s why “retirement” can be a big adjustment… – Just ask some athletes who come back and make it good for one more run. ( But don’t ask Brett Favre!)
Whether the kids’ response was rude or not really depends on things we can’t see in the comic strip – things like how Mr. Fogarty introduced his announcement, his vocal inflection, and whether or not he’s smiling when he makes the announcement. The kids could easily have been “yay-ing” with Mr. Fogarty.
Ah yes, the teacher who pretty much anchored all the “wow are my students tedious and dumb” gags is retiring. -Of course I’ll get fussed at for saying this, but it would make way more sense if it said “At the end of the school year, I will retire after x-many years. It has been an honor knowing you, I’m a lucky man to have had such a long career molding young minds, blah blah blah” followed by “Yay!”-Really, this feels more like “I have a new thermos.” “Yay!”
Why are they cheering? They’re graduating at the end of the year. They would never be seeing him again anyways or do they know that they aren’t really graduating and will only end up starting high school again.
“You mean the events that take place AFTER the acknowledgement of retirement?”^No. They take place BEFORE and DURING (and also AFTERWARD). If you’ve been with a company “X” amount of years, and you let your workmates know you’re retiring, they will be hooting. NOT because they don’t like you, but because it was the “dream” of many to work, save up and be able to say: “I’m OUTTA HERE!”…. – You certainly DO NOT “act sad”. Not unless the news is dire! And on top of that, you’re being a phony if you were to do that… – That bit of hyperbole you threw out is “incongruent”. It isn’t relatable, as such a thing is a truly tragic announcement. Retirement is “going out on top” (speaking strictly of the IDEAL sense, which seems to be what appears here) and “when you say” ….
“Also, you are assuming a workplace "^I told you from the get-go, that it was based off of the ideal situation… you’re only trying to expand to make it as dire (=negative) a situation as possible, to try to “destroy” other people’s enjoyment of something… – We are speaking of a COMIC where Greg is “sending off” his characters the way HE wants to. Now, certainly, you’re not going to say that he’d ‘render as tasteless" an “institution” that he himself created , are you? (We all know you are, but this is for the point…) – As I’ve mentioned already, he didn’t write Fogarty off here in a tragic scene… the previous strip had Fogarty himself saying: ‘I just wished that ONE of my announcements would end with a “Yay!”…. it’s what FOGARTY wanted. It’s what Mr. Evans gave to him… Fogarty got what he wanted … a “YAY!” at the end of one of his announcements. It was just a neat way for Greg to “tie up” the decades, and to give us all a sense of history, irony, and COMEDY .
The only way Fogarty could get that “Yay” is to say that he was leaving to the students that don’t appreciate him.^
Many times, this strip has shown Fogarty in “exasperation” over his students, as he felt them not working up to their potential. Many times, the students lamented over his numerous assignments (in their view) and his position as “the adult/teacher” vs. them, “the kids/students”. Today was just a “common ground” between them in their long “struggle”. In the end, he is a teacher who cares. In the end, they are students who will have benefitted from that care. It was just both sides in a moment of “victory”. But it wasn’t in “derision”, and it wasn’t in “glibness/ecstasy”, either… – As someone pointed out, earlier, if Fogarty said it with a “resigned, defeated” voice, then it would be different. Again, It wasn’t meant to be taken as a dire comic, it wasn’t taken to be “Blindly glib and gleeful”, either. It was just meant as a sendoff. Nothing more, nothing less. It was a comedic, historical reference, nothing more, nothing less. It wasn’t meant to be “derision”, it wasn’t meant to be “unbounded celebration”, either. – BTW, It’s nothing wrong with pointing out things about any comic, good OR bad. But… there is a difference between that and “stretching out a point” for the sake of “trying to find something wrong” and “over-dramatizing” just for the sake of arguing against something…..
“The truth is we don’t know 100% what Greg and Karen are thinking here;”^That’s not true. They communicate on Twitter, Facebook, (and when it’s up) the “Studio”, and numerous articles. That’s where I am drawing from……
of course they’re not fond of their teacher (totally). That’s (as you’ve mentioned) a classic trope… but… it’s not all that way. I’ve said this above. But it is a send off in the way that (as I have been mentioning ) FOGARTY had wanted. He was only wanting to hear a “Yay!” after the end of JUST ONE of his announcements. Greg has provided him with it. It was just a way to send him off, and to “commemorate” prior strips (and “Luann history”). Again , that’s the gist of what I was saying….
Everything else was only in response to that premise you’ve stretched out in listing all of the possible “doom and gloom” scenarios of retirement and trying to prove that this was “all bad”….
" Whether he wants to or not is irrelevant to my complaint; "^But earlier, you were basing your “complaint” (at least partly) on the supposition of the “possible” nature of Fogarty’s retirement…..
" I will ignore the doom and gloom and assume the kids all knew Fogarty really wanted to retire."^That wasn’t even something I was saying. Why would I say that they “already knew”? My position was saying that it wasn’t all about “doom and gloom”. – And It’s not about “winning and losing, either”…. as always, it’s “let’s just agree to disagree”….
