Zen Pencils by Gavin Aung Than for May 05, 2014

It's difficult in times like these. Ideals, dreams and cherished hopes rise within us...only to be crushed by grim reality. It's a wonder I haven't abandoned all my ideals, they seem so absurd and impractical. Yet I cling to them because I still believe, in spite of everything, that people are truly good at heart. I simply can't build my hopes on a foundation of confusion, misery, and death. I hear the approaching thunder that, one day, will destroy us too. I feel the suffering of millions. And yet, when I look up at the sky... I somehow feel that this cruelty too shall end and that peace and tranquility will return once again. -Anne Frank

Amazing how we humans refuse to learn from the past. Thanks! Today, May 5th we celebrate the end of WWII in the Netherlands. And yet, there are so many other small and large wars going on…

The only way to end wars is to get rid of the people.

I believe panel eight has the most important message from Ms. Frank.

Yes, but panel 9 most impressed me. At my age, I would have to say that I still believe that SOME people are good at heart. I’ve live long enough to KNOW that not all are. I try to associate only with those who ARE, because I am very credulous. I admire good and talented people.

It is coincidental as today is Monday when Gavin normally publishes a comic on this site. Also, I believe Gavin lives in Australia, where “Cinco de Mayo” isn’t so well known as here in the western hemisphere.
