Mary Lou: I've wanted to live on a farm all my life, Gene!
Mary Lou: if I never see another ocean sunset, it'll be too soon!
Gene: Three miles away, that is an ocean sunset!
Mary Lou: Well, I didn't say 'Nebraska'!
Gene lives near the redneck rivirera. That’s the Gulf coast area of Alabama and Florida. It’s still where most everyone from the Midwest and South head toward when going to the “beach”.
Hmmm… I haddem living on the Looziana/Mizsippy Guf Coast, but there ain’t no ocean sunsets THERE fershure!Pardon my axent, but I lived there for several summers back in the ’50’s, complements of Uncle Sam and his minions.
If you live near the Gulf of Mexico you’d never refer to it as an “ocean”. Who could ever get tired of seeing a sunset over water?? That’s a pretty good one-handed somersault Meg is doing.
In Lower Michigan, you can watch the sunrise in the east, over Lake Huron, and no matter where you do that, you can head west, take your sweet ol’ time, exploring a little bit along the way, maybe…Hit a bar or two…Or stock up on stuff for the campfire on the beach as the sun sets over Lake Michigan…. Pretty cool, really….
I’snt the point that here you have the child doing wonderful athletic movements and the parents and all of you commentators choose not to enjoy her sheer joy.
Nah, her Dad’s gonna use the money from selling the restaurant and the rest of his beachfront land to build a hotel/motel, which Gene will run with his degree in Hospitality Management.

And yet I bet they buy the restaurant from her Dad.

That settles it, they own the restaurant.

I suppose I could be mistaken, but I thought Gene was living on the East coast. That would make for ocean sunrises.

Hey! Let’s hear it for us Nebraska folks!! Who needs the ocean when you can have the Missouri River?

I thought Gene lived on the west coast, for some reason. Whatever – I guess a comics sun can rise wherever it wants to.

I thought they referenced alligators in a previous strip. That narrows things down a bit.

I thought Gene was in the Carolinas.

The Gulf of Mexico isn’t really an ocean, but women are not always precise in word choice.

Here in New England you only have to wait 5 mins. Sometimes we get snow, rain, hail sun and thunder snow all in the same day. Lol

Panama City would get a sunset in the west, especially in the winter when the sun sets further south….

The family still looks like a younger version of Arlo, Janis, and Gene.
