Ripley's Believe It or Not! HUH? The number of the beast, of ten used in Christian symbolism to refer to the devil, could actually be 616, not 666, according to the oldest papyrus fragment of the book of revelation discovered in 2005. Chandre Oraon of West Bengal, India, is worshiped as the reincarnation of a Hindu monkey God because he has a 14.5-inch hairy "tail"! The praying mantis is the only creature known to have a single ear -- as opposed to a pair -- AND it is located on its chest!

Hmm. The primary Marvel Comics universe is Earth 616. Coincidence?

Not the number of the devil, but the number of the Antichrist. And was that papyrus even in Aramaic? Come on…

Knowledge that the original number could be “616” instead of “666” is a lot older than 2005. Writers as early as the second century mention it.

@TruckDriverFritz“I suppose the 616 area code has to be somewhere if it exists now doesn’t it? Why would anyone “a figured”?”
That’s you, right? You were curious if it existed, now you not only know that it does, but where. You’re welcome.

There is a legend that Matthew was originally written in Aramaic, but I know of no solid reason to believe that anything else was written in any language other than Greek, although some parts involve conversations and speeches that well may originally have been spoken in Aramaic, or Hebrew, or maybe even Latin. At that time, Greek was as ordinary as English is on the Internet. (Latin was growing, but outside Italy it was still the new kid on the block.) If you wanted to be read, Greek was the language you used.
