Just to be clear:This strip originally ran on May 23, 1989, and first rerun on June 7, 1994 (that’s =before= Bill Watterson’s retirement on December 31, 1995). For some reason that escapes me they decided to update the copyright notice. Trivia: note that the scans of the strip on all three versions are different.
This probably happened during a personal sabbatical (unrelated to the licencing fight). Watterson mentioned in one of his books that Universal Press Syndicate gives all their cartoonists four weeks of vacation per year.
One of my kids put the car in gear on an incline outside a store once. I bolted out the store, couldn’t open the door as it was approaching a pole, got behind and stopped the car before it got into traffic. Then pushed it back and parked it, parking brake on.
This has got to be Calvin’s fantasy and not real. First you need to put the car in neutral and release the brake. You also need the key to unlock the gears.

You are right Hobbes, Cavin’s mother will be bothered. Also molested, angry, irate, and in a very dark mood.

So what with the reruns. Why criticize a creative genius for something they do all the time on television?

So mom leaves the car unlocked so a 6 year old can get in it, take it out of park and push it out of the driveway? Hmm, who’s fault is this? LOL

Hobbes’s comment in the second panel is one of my all-time favorite C&H lines.

Could be the car is either a Ford, GM, or Toyota. Just be happy the car doesn’t explode or catch fire.

Looks like Calvin’s clubhouse plans are rolling right along. Gaining momentum, even.

Now days they have to have the key to get it out of gear.

Now Calvin, learn a lesson from this:Newton’s first law: a body in motion tends to stay in motion.
Don’t fight gravity; gravity usually wins.
