I got home from work about forty-five minutes ago. Changed into shorts and an Hawaiian print shirt, and took my dog for a walk. It’s hot. For the Oregon coast, it’s roasting. The thermometer on the (south) side of my garage says, 91.
I see I’ve been accused of being too crazy about camping. It’s just that he showed me how the sleeping bags zip together so we need nothing inside (and has a nice inflatable mattress). I love camping in cold weather for that reason (because it’s so HOT inside) and plan to have another weekend at Highlands War (not the whole thing- the showers are not like at home).
I know I’m late, but I gotta weigh in on that Lincoln photo…. It’s famous, and looks right to me…Officers like McClellan travelled in style, with china and linens and servants for their tents.
And the coloring may have been almost contemporaneous… I know I’ve seen it before.it was popular to have “important” photographs carefully painted in special transparent oil colors.
In the 1860’s they were expensive, taken only by professionals, with heavy, large format cameras..
The negative was on glass, or sometimes metal, and as big as the final print… no enlarging a 35mm image to 10×12″, thus lowering the resolution…
The quality and clarity are often truly impressive…. with amazing detail, contrast and depth of field.

(Be sure to click on it to enlarge it.)
Some were less perfect, of course….The flash powder was dangerous and sometimes burned too brightly, washing out the faces, and people might look grim or blurry because of trying to sit very still for 3 to 5 minutes.
50 years later when every home had a Brownie camera, people expected fuzzy images…. but not in Lincoln’s day.
Digital photography is great for communication and sharing… even art…but has to be pretty high-end to match 150 year old portraits like this:
Our tent might also have the sign you posted on the other, but I only plan to post our “devices” as soon as his is approved. We DO, however, try not to locate our tent too close to others (in case we make too much noise during the night at various times).

If I want a laugh, all I have to do is look for your name. A couple of those pictures are too funny (I won’t say which).
