Detective Tracy’s following of what has come to be called “popular culture” (popcult for short) is apparently somewhat sporadic. He became aware of and was reading J. Straightedge Trustworthy, a comic strip, but he seems to be largely unaware of the stars of films under production in his own city. I wonder how much he knows about horse racing?………………………………………..In deference to the requirement for this strip to be “family friendly” (i.e., bowdlerized), we are not being shown the battered corpse of Kolossal, but Mysta Chimera’s uncertainty expressed in panel 3 hints that he is, in the vernacular, pretty messed up.
perhaps tracy ISN’T as clever as we thought… I mean, there’s a film being produced called “THE MOON MAID” and he is SURPRISED to see franken-mindy on the set?!!?
As Ray Toler pointed out yesterday: “…the shadow of Doubleup using his whip on Ponytail was much more dramatic in Joe’s portrayal than if it had been more graphic.”.While I sometimes miss the gritty aspects of violence that Gould was able to employ, there is something to be said for trusting in the reader’s imagination. When the Painted Lady was murdered (1969), all we saw were her legs and hair. Much was left to our imagination. As a kid, I was shocked by her death. She made a very strong impression, and I figured she would be in the strip for some time to come. Not only was she a knockout, but her nightclub was a fabulous setting for nightlife and shady characters. It was a big impact Sunday in my eyes.
Wow, who know Tracy was such a chauvinist! “Let’s get you away from here Mysta”? Really? FMM should zap him on the spot! Even though she’s a fake she’s still a lot tougher then he’s been in many a year! Maybe it’s Richard who’s getting a little squeamish in the belly and is using her as an excuse to leave. Notice she’s looking down on the puddle with no problem while he’s looking at her, moving away perhaps??? Tracy used to be such a man of action. Now,,,,Yadda Yadda Yadda!!!
Love Mysta’s reaction. “Is that Mr. Kolossal?” says a lot more about his condition than a drawing would. (Even though some of you would like to see the remains.)Since Scott saw Mysta and Kolossal talking privately, maybe Tracy’s taking her aside to see what she knows.(And maybe to keep her from barfing on the crime scene,)
And what happens now with Mysta without Kolossal around? My guess is a certain comic strip writer takes over as director of the movie (much to her dismay) because “The show must go on.” I think Flintheart would agree.
Dick has plenty of time for entertainment…..remember how he just escaped Kadaver through the knowledge he had gained from his love of reality shows, lol?

So, Dick Tracy never heard that Mysta was shooting a movie? I’m surprised.

That’s a pretty ancient-looking camera in panel 3.
