No need to call the police — he’s already here. Sometimes you just have to be in the right place at the right time. Seems there’s been a [staged] accident. When Tracy’s eyes are wide open like that, you know something serious just happened.
My reading: the scream of some some secretary or script-girl (?), after the thundering hoofbeats of the killer-horse Nightmare! Bye bye, Kolossal, kicked and stomped into the Big Studio in the Sky!—And I concur that Tracy in panel 3 is a great take on the craggy-faced detective.
Now in real life first thing Tracy should be wondering is why on earth he DOES have pictures of an everyday, low class longshot like QuickDraw……and on another count, since we know Angus is a crook too, now, he’s probably maddest that HE didn’t think of switching them first, lol
If a horse came off the track (in any condition) a ride in the trailer across town that sweat would dry and the white salt would show. It definitely would have cooled down and dried by the time they had returned, but I know the DT team and most commentators do NOT know that, and this is still the best comic in the world.
Having said that the two happiest days here at our farm was the day the last horse left and the first day we became chicken & duck farmers. I like our birds!
I see someone knows their horses. Check out the image on panel #3. I would not come around a horse like that. The horse is either very fearful, or very angry. You do not want to be around a 1,500 lb animal when he’s angry.
I’m thinking something might have happened to Angus rather than Kolossal. Would Mike and Joe be able to kill off a character who originated in another strip?
Sorry…..but when the racing form DOES have pictures of horses, they are of top shelf ones, not old plugs. Besides, the way they noticed the horse had been switched was by the tattoo covering washing off….that sure as heck wouldn’t show in an outside photo anyways. And Sparkplug would have been hot-walked and cooled down after the race as well. But I don’t really want to nitpick here, it’s a fun story and the vast majority of people wouldn’t know these things, so it all works fine. Yep, I also do wonder if Mike can “kill off” an outside character……but if so, I have a few others I’d like him to introduce to the strip as well, ha ha

Why did I just flash on someone finding Sparkplug’s head?

Now I’m starting to wonder if Nightmare might just be descended of the horses owned by a certain Diomedes…

Well, since we’re all expecting to see Kolossal dead….will we? Would not surprise me at all to see Angus gone instead, or some other development
