saw some mallards paddling in the creek on Sunday. couldn’t believe they weren’t freezing their little webbed toes off, as there was ice on the edges of the stream and the pond was ice covered. i always thought ducks migrated south to avoid Canadian winters. i’m thinking some thermal longjohns (or maybe a wetsuit) might have helped them as well.
Ducks and some other water birds often don’t go any further south than they have to. If there’s open water, they’ll stick around. Some don’t even seem to need that, especially Canada Geese.
Properly maintained feathers are pretty warm – think down coats, comforters and such.
Back in IL, I used to keep a poultry water warmer in my little pond to keep the water just above freezing. The birds could be seen any morning splashing away. I don’t need anything to keep my water features from freezing here;-)
it could be interpreted as a political cartoon–
the u.s. is floundering in the drink in one of it’s non-winnable wars and instead of just getting out, clamors for more ‘surges’ to continue the floundering

If you don’t grab the rope first you wouldn’t need the long johns.

Crack kills, dodo! Hey, is that skier about to hit the tree, or what? How do you figure that girl can skate with no eyes?

Political themes maybe…?

That line was a doozy of an ice breaker. Now we know why the dodo is extinct.
