Yes, father, I see you... Hmm? The training wheels?... Well yes, but... But, sir, I really think they continue to be of use... I... Well, no, sir... I'm not talking back... I... hmmm... Yessir. Very well, father... I understand... No more training wheels, sir? When he formed a crude analogy comparing me to a welfare queen in the training wheels to a food stamp program I knew I didn't stand a chance.

I just like to make statements that conform to a reasonable and common sense approach to reality, as if reality could be approached by way of reason and common sense.

At least Father made the call personally instead of telling Jarvis to do it…

My, how condescending and righteous of you. Betting you’re not a woman.

Provide incentive for self-reliance, hard work, and self-control instead of reliance upon the state, no work, and free-for-all sex and drug binges.
If only rightwingers wanted the same for Wall Street.

Isn’t this the first time we’ve sort of seen Sedgie’s father?

As if the father doesn’t get government subsidies and tax expenditures — not to mention hiring illegals.

As much as I did and still do despise Bill Clinton, I applaud his welfare reform that sent millions of supposedly dependent welfare recipients to work. But what are the odds that Hillary could get elected if people thought she would revive the same program?

Morning news did a whole week on bike safety & riding. There’s a bike school that takes kids from 8-13. They stated – the training wheels do not come off until the child can safely demonstrate balance and strength. (actually – I think they take kids as young as 4 and put them on a tricycle and then work them up to a two-wheeler)..Poor Sedgwick. Whether he’s ready or not – the wheels come off.

Does that matter? Reality seems not to care. Our wars on drugs, poverty and crime, while brilliantly conceived in immaculate intellectual compassion and grace, have resulted in pretty much the opposite of what was intended. I am beginning to suspect that reality doesn’t care at all what I think or believe, even when my ideas are all focus group tested and poll very well.

Will Sedgie’s enforced self-reliance work? Is he capable of operating a two-wheeler without training wheels (way back when, I learned without the help [?] of training wheels)? Will Jarvis help him learn to keep his balance? Is that a root beer float Jarvis is serving?

“Minimum wage, tariff inequities, expansive welfare, obamacare, incredible oil regulations, lack of border control, etc… "-Once again: If you want fewer illegals, stop businesses from hiring them.

At least when I divorced my husband (and father of our 4 children) I WOULD have been able to be employed in some domestic capacity back in 1975 (my divorce in Chicago).
Fortunately I gained employment instead in drafting (where I excelled in HS) and gradually studied and worked up into engineering design.
I raised my own children (who were barely in HS in 75) to be self sufficient in every way possible and to have a good work ethic (much lacking in many now). My last layoff happened in a poor economy (especially for my construction field here in AZ) but I was already 67-8, and had begun SSA at 65 (normal, so my employer was only paying Medicare supplement (not a full health insurance) but he wanted a licensed engineer so he could use while he took vacation trips, and replaced me to keep staff numbers low (very small company.
My old company in IL would take me back if I moved back there but I moved to enjoy year round sunshine and flowers. I deserve that now that I’m 76. I can give classes in many crafts to groups of friends and I’m moving closer to them (and to my new lover).
As to politics, they all lie and are useless once they have power, regardless of party. My man listens all day to NPR and I have my local Fox channel for morning news. I never have news in evening – just funnies, to sleep well.

“I’m all for cracking down on all businesses that hire illegals.”-Riiiiight. -Them businesses that hire illegals, did you want to discuss their fundamental respect for the rule of law?
braindead Premium Member over 10 years ago
“Finally, the rule of law is disrespected FIRST by those crossing the border illegally”-And that makes it absolutely okay for businesses to disrespect the law.-And, it’s your belief that illegals never let relatives or friends in their native country know that there are jobs open in their shop or industry and they should come and fill them?-Billions for a border fence, but not one dollar to prevent hiring of illegals.
