@leftwingpatriotTV character Archie Bunker was known for his use of malapropisms. After Nixon resigned from office, Bunker said he was now residing in San Clemency.
And many of you only think or pretend to have scruples and are blind to your blindness..Whereas I actually DO have scruples and am NOT blinded by my prejudices and partisanship.
Nixon was indeed a big time crook. It was odd that he was also so paranoid that he felt he had to do some of the things he engaged in doing. I remember seeing the brick wall, symbolic of setting himself apart from others and protecting himself. I remember seeing Nixon shaking hands with people and not even looking them in the eye. That was Nixon. I don’t believe that all presidents “did it” and all presidents are the same. They are individuals. Nixon opened the doors to China to the US, an example of a positive thing he did. He started the EPA, Environmental Protection Agency, yes, it was started by a Republican. The GOP has forgotten that a Republican started the EPA. Environmental protection should not be a partisan issue, nor should reproductive rights, civil rights, etc. Those battles were fought long ago. We should have moved on. All of these issues are discussed in GT’s current work, “Alpha House.”
It’s good to remember that Karl Rove worked as a political operative for Nixon and learned his techniques there. -Not that there’s a direct correlation between Bush and Nixon or anything like that, though.
tigger: “liberal” cartoonists link Obama to Nixon? Well, just as you’ve claimed to be “non-partisan”, you’ve redefined another political term. But I guess you heard that on NoBrainCorporation broadcasts. WHICH; btw, I’ve gone back to watch them a little again, and it is startling how far right their subliminal scriptwriting pendulum has swung, and that comes from the producers, not on-air “talent”.
“Nixon traded the Oval Office for a Presidential Pardon in Advance for ANY AND ALL felonies and misdemeanors; ".That may be true, but do you have any source proof rather than just suspicion based on the fact that Ford DID pardon him? After all, I don’t see any way Nixon could have forced Ford to pardon him after he left office. He had no friends and no power. It goes against the grain to say it, but it is possible Ford was telling the truth when he said why he pardoned Nixon. It is also very likely that pardon cost Ford a chance at election next go around.
It is also interesting that members of Congress still wanted to impeach Nixon after he resigned despite the fact they could not remove him from office since he wasn’t there. I guess they could have barred him from running for public office, but that didn’t seem like a likely problem and never came up.
Note that Ford waited a month to pardon Nixon for any crimes he may have committed while in office. It is quite possible a pardon was never discussed, that both thought resignation would satisfy those unhappy with Nixon..The fact that Ford lost in 1976 does not prove a tradeoff any more than being elected would have disproved it. If a bad enough candidate had run against Ford, Ford would have won just as many who despised Nixon voted for him over McGovern..I mentioned the matter of force because if we assume Ford was dishonest enough to buy Nixon’s resignation with a promise of pardon, he would have been dishonest enough to break his word when Nixon was out unless Nixon had something over him. This seems unlikely..Giving Ford the benefit of the doubt is in keeping with the American concept of justice, the presumption of innocence absent actual proof. I thought you might have actual proof to back up your claim. Proof may exist if it actually happened. As you point out, Ford wasn’t much of a president, but his life indicated he was a fairly decent man.
Sure you named names when you wrote “some of us”. You named yourself as being in that group..It has been my experience that those who claim some moral superiority are often the very ones blind to their failings. They talk justice while not applying the neutral principles of justice to those they dislike. They justify many wrongs as being for the greater good. They figure laws don’t apply to them since they serve a higher law or higher power..In many ways they are much like Nixon.
When you say you don’t pardon someone until after he has been convicted, you are saying President Carter was wrong to use his pardoning power to grant amnesty to those who illegally dodged the draft but had not yet been convicted??If not, why not?.If yes, based on what written limitation to his power to pardon??And this not saying it was good or bad, since that would show further disregard for law — the ends being used to justify the means rather than saying both were wrong, both were right or it was a different situation..Usually the blind realize they are blind.
Gosh and golly! Of course Obama would never put a wall around the White House — but then he doesn’t need to. The press give him all the protection he needs.
He didn’t believe what he was doing was criminal — remember his statement, “If the President does it, it’s not illegal.”.And he ran on a “law and order” platform.

Of course not. To have criminal intent, one must believe there are laws that apply to them. He didn’t, hence no criminal intent.

Feiffer did a strip with Nixon as a giant ape running wild:
“He’s tearing up the constitution!”
“He’s wrecking the Supreme Court!”
“Somebody stop him!” “We can’t.”
“Why not?” “Because it would tear the country apart!”
