Here’s what Poncho saw…Why you can’t reply to comments that start with images. When you click on Reply, GoComics creates the reply window which has a few words from the comment that you are replying to. If the comment begins with an image, the reply window may have only part of the image link. Those of you that post images are familiar with <img src="URL">. If the reply window gets <img src=" portion but not the complete link, then a broken link icon is displayed. Meanwhile, the browser keeps looking for the ending quote. The next quote appears within the form tag <form accept-charset="utf-8" class="comment_submission" action="/comments/1155792/" method="post" data-remote="true"> right after accept-charset=. The result is a link that looks like <img src="http://bunnyap...</em></p> <form accept-charset=" utf-8"="" class="comment_submission" action="/comments/1155792/" method="post" data-remote="true"> which Not a valid link and worse has corrupted the form tag, making the SUBMIT button useless. And now over to Susan who will explain what this crap means.

x_Tech’s description, above, tells you exactly what’s happening….but in case it’s too technical….

As he said, when you click “Reply”, the reply window shows you the first few words of the comment to which you’re responding.

However…. if that comment begins with a picture, the characters that it “grabs” to display are the first part of the image link instead of any words.

It doesn’t go far enough to include the ending of the URL. Bingo! It gives you only part of a link to an image, so you see that broken picture icon.

Meanwhile, in the background, your browser doesn’t like broken links…it looks for the next set of quotation marks to try to finish off the URL…

So it wrongly grabs part of the code that was supposed to make the SUBMIT button work….and ruins THAT too.

Clicking on “Submit” then does nothing…. and you can’t post.

Why on earth would you flag innocent images? Write to GoComics if you must, but I don’t see flagging images as something that would fix the problem.

And…. _what is wrong with actually TYPING the name of the person to whom you’d like to respond? If you can type a comment, you should also be able to type a name!

As someone who posts pictures every day, I really am not looking for all of them to be flagged!

Everything under the strip on my page is exactly as it should be today. I DID lose all those things for a few hours over the weekend, but they all returned to normal after I rebooted my computer, so I don’t know whether it was a computer problem or a GoComics problem that just coincidentally fixed itself as I was re-booting.

I’m sorry…..I’m just not as trusting of the “powers that be” as you seem to be. There are many mysteries on this site. There have been times when all the pictures of just a very few people (myself included) disappeared on certain days. Anybody who is familiar with the types of images I post can attest to the fact that I never post anything objectionable. To this day, no one knows what happened (although there are a few credible theories). A lot of my pictures take a lot of time to do. It was…..painful to see them all disappear.

So, forgive me if I’m not jumping on the bandwagon in favor of flagging pictures when the reply doesn’t work. To me , that’s just not a good enough reason to flag someone else….ever.

I have absolutely nothing against you at all, so please don’t think that I do. I just don’t agree with that particular suggestion. BUT, obviously….. people will do whatever makes sense to them. On that, we probably do agree!

(PS: You’re right…GC doesn’t always reply, or at least not right away. I have resent the same messages to them two or three times, and in my experience, they finally do get back to you. Perhaps their REPLY button is also non-functional!? LOL)

Gosh, I had this figured out a long time ago but not in the technical terms. As Susan and Stel said – just type the name in or find a place where they’ve commented without a picture. GoComics may be aware of it and there may be nothing they can do.……………………………………………………. Anyway – what ever is that dog doing that Poncho wouldn’t do? Anticipation.

    @Old Timer

Perhaps so….although I really don’t know enough about it. What I do know is, for whatever reason, some pictures were chosen to be deleted over others…in other words, certain people (including me) lost all their pictures, while others’ were left alone on those particular days last year, even though we may have posted close to the same number of pictures. Like I said……a mystery!…and one that caused me to give up on the whole thing for short while.

Nowadays, I don’t do nearly as much as I used to…maybe, one or two pictures per day. Today: none at all. Even so, I do NOT think that they should be flagged. Flagging is usually used if the picture +/or comment is objectionable to someone. It brings it to GC’s attention. Just how does flagging a picture that you haven’t been able to REPLY to supposed to explain to GC that the issue is: “REPLY function not operational.” ?

(Sorry, Old Timer …I know I segued back to the original issue, which you hadn’t commented on and it wasn’t meant to be directed at you, but more of a general statement. But, yes…. your theory was one that was brought up last year, and may indeed have merit!)

BTW: interestingly enough, my REPLY button would NOT work just now in my response to Old Timer …. and there was NO image in his comment that would have prevented the reply button from working, so now what?

    I give up.

The reply button doesn’t always work, and I think it is a technical glitch on gocomics end, just like double and triple posts, etc.

AND I LOVE THE PICTURES, ESP. STEL’S AND 2 OLDS, TO NAME A COUPLE!

Thank you for your comment about my insult. I never intended it to be taken too seriously.-As for the Internet speed — perhaps yours is slower than mine. Even so, if you just counted reading time, you could read all the weekday strips since January in under a half hour. Longer if you wanted to savor them — but, I assumed that anyone impatient with the pace of the story arc wouldn’t be interested in lingering.-BTW, this arc (the one about the new dog hassling Poncho) didn’t start until April 15. From January til April 15, we’ve had the arc about the mailman & hobo dogs, and the arc about the spiritual life of kibble. I just let that part pass before, to keep things simple — but, I’m mentioning it now to point out that 5 weeks is not long for a story arc (it will probably be 2 or more weeks before the end of the arc, but that’s still a brief time).

Thanks for explaining that. I didn’t realize what was involved (kind of “behind the scenes”) even if you think you’re simply pressing the shift key to make all caps. Now, I understand.

Between Adblock+ and Ghostery, none of those things EVER appeared as I browsed. You have no idea how much faster gocomics loads when you block all the trackers and ads….
